That law is a little to extreme, but all states should have similar law's. My brother was 20 and dating a 17 year old in montana. That is statutory according to the stupid law's in montana.  The law has nothing to do with pedophilia and is just to protect older teens and young adults.

They have now been married 15 years and are 37 and 34.

Maybe 5 years would be better, but this law is certainly better than some states.

I'm only guessing, but maybe the 10 years is "within the age of consent"?  I believe in NJ, I think the law is 5 years within the age of consent, so a 21 year old can date a 16 year old (NJ age of consent).  I believe for an 18 years old, it's within 3 years, so that person can be with a 15 year old.
