My daughter needs a place in NYC for 3 months

Recommended Posts

She is studying Fashion and just got an internship with a place near Times Square.  Roughly mid May to Mid August.  She may have a roommate or two -- a friend of hers and our other daughter are thinking of tagging along for the fun/experience of living there, and to help spread the pain/cost.

Any thoughts on where or how to find reasonable pricing with a reasonable commute in a reasonably safe area?

Also I presume she won't take her car but that is an option if it makes sense.

@Hardcore troubadour, @TommyGavin, @WhiteWonder, @vomit any other locals I should add?

TIA

Is she gonna be dressed up as Elmo taking pics with tourists?

Maybe for a side gig.  Her main job is with a company that does design and manufacture for both their own brands and some large branded partners that you have heard of.  Mostly athletic wear.

What is your budget? Even an apartment share is going to run $2000/month in any safe commutable neighborhood unfortunately.

I’d say east side by the UN is the safest area. You don’t want to have her commuting too far. Also look into housing at or near NYU.  That’s lower east side area, but it’s ok.

I live in northern NJ. Never had any interest in living in the city. My cousin and her husband did it for a few years when she was dancing (broadway!) and his office was in Jersey city. I believe they paid 3k/mo for a tiny studio.

I might actually suggest looking at one of the nicer areas of Jersey city where they can quickly commute back and forth

I also imagine needing a place for only 3 months makes it a little tougher.

would they mind a slightly longer commute? they can all crash at my place. No rent just need cooking and cleaning done in skimpy outfits 🤷🏻‍♂️

Near NYU is a great suggestion

Just looked it up, you can apply for summer housing at NYU. Not necessary to be a student there for the summer, people on internships are eligible.

I was going to suggest Jersey City as well.

And also offer my bed for her to “sleep” in, but it’s on the other side of the country

My work sent out an email notice to the US northeast employees acknowleding NYC violence. Offering a safety session with NYC law enforcement officers, as well as offering self defense classes to employees and suggesting the "buddy system" when going to a from the office while in that city..

And my company is as woke as you can get.

I dated a girl who lived in a 2 bedroom with her sister (owned by the parents) on John St in the financial district I think. I remember it was super close to WTC and I would take the path in and then just a short walk. Neighborhood seemed safe. Was close to piers. I’m sure her place was crazy expensive but a quick search for apartments in the area shows some not terribly priced 2/3 bedrooms

so if she had 2 roommates, that isn’t bad for example. And it’s likely a doorman building with lots of amenities

I was going to say this too. Could take the ferry and shuttle bus into midtown.
NYU housing is a great idea too.

Does she drink ? I can show her around !!!

BTW Times Square is a shithole

Hoboken ain't cheap, either ... much, much safer, of course - but it's pricey.

I would suggest Kew Gardens, get in to Midtown in under 15 mins on the RR (stop is right off Austin/Lefferts, pretty decent area).

Are we just naming nice places or where she can actually stay?

Jersey City was mentioned as an alternative, although as someone mentioned I'm sure she'd rather be in NY all things considered.

Thanks!  My other daughter's good friend recently graduated from NYU; I think she has looked into it and found that it was "family" housing but "family" meant spouses and/or kids, not siblings.  But I'll check with her.

Interesting, thanks.  Somebody asked about a budget; I don't know that we have one yet, it is all happening quickly and I'm trying to see what a "reasonable" expectation is.  In the end we'll pay more for safety in general.

But part of this experience is for her to see if she would want to live there for her career.  IMO she can't make that decision if we are subsidizing a cushy place she'll never be able to afford on her own.  So it needs to be a bit of a sh1thole, and/or inconvenient.  But safety is my biggest concern.

All seriousness? I know it sounds like an adventure. But not now man. Remember that cute little girl who got stabbed to death by a couple of prepubescent black kids in the park? There's so much random violence going on right now there. Frigging send her to Europe. It's saFer.

The murder of Tessa Majors occurred near Morningside Park in Morningside Heights, Manhattan, on December 11, 2019. Majors, an eighteen-year-old student at Barnard College, was attacked and stabbed by three teenagers as part of a robbery.

You make a valid point… although if she ends up with a job in the city, then a 2-3 bedroom with roommates like I listed may be doable at that point anyway.
Also she will get a feel for most of city life so as long as she realizes her own place down the road may not be as nice, she should be okay as far as expectations.

I saw a 3 bedroom for less in Washington Heights. Honestly don’t know how that area ranks in terms of safety but some quick searches seemed to suggest it wasn’t too bad.

I had another cousin who couldn’t quite afford to live in the city at first so her first apartment was in Brooklyn.

you may want to pay a little more for her to stay in a safe area of NYC for this 3 month experience and she might find down the road that if she wants to work/live in the area she will be okay with a Jersey city commute.

For a three month rental ? Forrest Hills? I don’t know about that.  I guess anything is possible.
