Hardcore troubadour 15,511 Posted February 19, 2023 You can argue all you want about who’s fault it is. But what’s not in question is that the response to this has been a disaster. As inhumane and unfeeling about American citizens as it gets. The democrats have good practice at it. They completely ignore and disregard American citizens at the southern border and their pleas for relief.

I don't know for sure but I can reasonably think what will happen based on what we've seen so far and with what has happened in our history. So far the railroad company is doing nothing to help these people.

dogcows 1,030 Posted February 20, 2023 Interesting take on the situation and how people are playing politics in its aftermath: https://www.inquirer.com/opinion/commentary/trump-east-palestine-visit-railroad-regulations-20230219.html#loaded Quote With the investigation into the East Palestine wreck still in its early phases, it’s not clear if the modern brakes — originally required for installation by 2021 — could have prevented the toxic derailment or whether the specific Obama rule would have applied. But experts do believe the new brakes could have mitigated the wreckage — and thus the release of so many hazardous chemicals. And the rule reversal wasn’t the only time that Team Trump sided with Big Rail over the forgotten Americans who live on the wrong side of their tracks. In 2019, for example, the Trump administration moved to not strengthen but relax regulations on shipping fracked natural gas through communities like East Palestine. The same year, Trump’s White House also killed an Obama-era proposal that would have required two crew members in freight-train locomotives. It probably won’t shock you to learn that the men Trump appointed to run the Federal Railroad Administration and the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration had both been top executives in the lucrative freight industry. Ultra Max Power 214 Posted February 21, 2023 Breaking Points had an excellent video on this issue over the weekend. Plenty of blame to go around to all sides. Ultimately the dollar won out and until it stops winning, this will continue to happen. We still don't have a reason for this derailment yet, so more will come to light, but they also highlighted how the recent amount of trains derailing is not normal, no matter how someone wants to frame it. Yeah, they broke down the erosion of safety over profits well over the last decade +. No admission is guilt-free. Profits over people is the real American way.

The Real timschochet 6,849 Posted February 21, 2023 Good piece in the Washington Post this morning about how some on the right are trying to make this a racial story.
