Greatest SongWriters

Recommended Posts

As far as SongWriter, the greatest of all-time, there is no question = Bob Dylan

And I guess you could put the 2 duos of Lennon / McCartney  and  Richards / Jagger

Joni Mitchell must be included

But one that I think is underrated is Paul Simon.

Yes, there's plenty of others;  Country .. Soul .. and even you may want to include Rap  (although the music is missing)

Who's your go to ?

Sorry kids, there's one name and everything else doesn't even come close. It just doesn't. If you're going strictly by songwriters? Jennifer Warren.

Look her up

I'm gonna give you double credit; first that's a damn good pick and secondly you didn't say Freddie Mercury

Elton wrote 100% of the music, otherwise Bernie would just have been a poet,

Good call on Hunter. Can't believe he didn't come right to my mind. His songs on Workingman's Dead and American Beauty are incredible.

Fare you well, fare you well
I love you more than words can tell
Listen to the river sing sweet songs
To rock my soul

Song writing is credited for both lyrics and music. I know Elton didn't write lyrics, but he is credited equally on every song.

What music would he write without lyrics?

So for you a songwriter means lyricist only? What about instrumentals? Are they not songs?

Boy, Classical Gas was a damn good instrumental song.  When Mason Williams performed it on Smother Brothers Comedy Hour back in the day, I got chills when the background  darkness became lighted and the Orchestra kicked in at about  :47.  Wow, what a great song - damn good guitarist !

Wanna know how good Willie is when he and Merle performed a mini movie of Townes Van Zandt's Pancho & Lefty.  Van Zandt appears in the video, see if you can pick him out.  Great song.  Great artists.  Great writer.  Great mini movie.
