Now that Covid is over, I really thought they'd replace the Wellness Day with Juneteenth. Instead, it's in addition to... It's the day a white man served papers to another white man officially ending slavery, being one of the first countries to do so. This after the bloodiest war in American history where well over 600k men died and 1 in 9 returned home permanently disabled. It’s one of most important and meaningful holidays we have, imo. And…. Slavery ended in the south a full 2 years earlier but many slave owners did not tell their slaves they were free. So this day is the day in Texas that slaves found out, 2 years later, that they were no longer slaves. There are pockets of isolated communities where slavery-like conditions continued almost 100 years later. I had a neighbor who told me she escaped from her home where the blacks lived under this way.
