Donald Trump wants to raise import taxes (tariffs) to 10% on all products if he wins the election

Recommended Posts

https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2023/08/22/trump-trade-tariffs/

For the record, the average import tax is currently around 3%. For Chinese products it’s 19% (which IMO is really hurting China’s economy without helping ours.) Trump wants it at 10% across the board. He essentially wants the same sort of full Protectionism that this country hasn’t seen since the days of Smoot-Hawley, which I believe brought on the Great Depression. Again, in my opinion, this one issue would be enough to oppose Trump’s re-election in favor of almost anyone else. I believe if enacted, even for a short time, the effect on our economy would be catastrophic.

Trump supporters: do you agree with this proposal?

The biggest problem is the idea that it's on a country by county basis.

To be fair to Trump though, Biden didn't exactly make sweeping reforms of Trumps policies........

I agree in equality

out tariff should be universal from all countries, importing and exporting

this article if probably written by the same people who were against the new North American Trade agreement Trump put in place

I'm not knowledgeable enough on this type of stuff to understand how it helps/hurts us, so I'll need to do some more research.

However, on it's face, common sense dictates that if liberals and lefties - the Hate America First crowd - don't like (or hate) something, then that something is usually good for the country.

Lol.
But it’s not really a left vs right issue. Leftists like Bernie Sanders and AOC actually support similar ideas. Free traders like Hillary, Obama, McConnell, and most establishment Republicans do not.

relating it to the great depression is stupid as well, as trade used to take months back then

You’re right. Smoot/Hawley took several years to result in the Great Depression. This wouldn’t take nearly as long.

its funny you think Hillary, Obama and Mcconnell are free trade people

I was in favor of that agreement. I was also in favor of NAFTA and I never could tell the difference between the two. Can you?

no it means trade in itself is completely different, freighters deliver in less then a week now, times change, trade policy changes

Not funny. I look at their history. Biden is wishy washy on this.

I think your position is rather silly. Why not study the issue and then decide?

I can't tell the difference either, or if there is one, but I read similar end of the world stories from probably WAPO at the time

I don’t think that’s accurate. I think you read such stories when NAFTA was abruptly ended and there was no replacement on the horizon. Thankfully Trump’s people (notably Kushner) saved him at the time by negotiating a new agreement almost exactly like the old one (so far as I can tell.) Trump slapped a new name on it and called it a great accomplishment.

Smoot-Hawley didnt cause the Great Depression but it did exasperate it. Punitive Tariffs are almost always reciprocated... and if you look at  what happened with Smoot-Hawley... American import/exports fell around 60% and world trade fell by 40%. The cost of tariffs are also almost always passed on the the consumer so they won't have the economic impact we hope they will... this have been proven again and again throughout history. Although I am very much a fan of protecting America and our industries... I can't see how this would be a positive.

This has always been the argument for any type of enforced cost onto a business like a raised minimum wage for instance.

The objective of tariffs in trumps eyes at least it’s not to affect costs but to encourage savings by building business at home.  There is literally nothing we have to have from other countries. Zero

You mean from a consumer standpoint, however we need alot from an industrial standpoint.

The oil industry is being impacted greatly by the chinese tariff on xanthan gum. We only produce food quality grade domestically and not industrial grade. This means we have to pay the crazy high food grade prices which really impacts our cost.

Further there are a few important minerals that we do not have access to in the US.

The United States lacks domestic reserves of five commodities: manganese, niobium, strontium, tantalum, and tin.

Additionally it’s the wages and desire to do these jobs. I have always assumed there is a great deal of these manufacturing jobs that cannot be done here and be cost effective.

Maybe this is incorrect but this is why these jobs moved away in the first place. Our system is built on buying cheap stuff and a lot of it.

To me tariffs are more of a weapon than useful policy.  When tariffs are raised its effectively a tax on Americans.  The rise in cost is intended to diminish domestic hunger for foreign products.  Often the raising of tariffs is associated with a drop in GDP.  So in terms of policy using them can be effective, but mostly to secure a more productive negotiation elsewhere; some might see this as a quid pro quo, but "quo pro quo" is the bread and butter of international negotiations.

I have always found tariffs to be something I am tepid on, when used in the past to protect domestic manufacturers they were just not that effective.  The problem we face is that our competitors have an unfair advantage; they are socialist states.  In socialism the well-being of the people is subjugated to the welfare of the state and party.  So places like China can be grotesquely cruel to their people, whereas we cannot.  Not that we should want to be. So in that perspective tariffs can be an equalizer.

I do not have a strong objection since most nations just take advantage of our generosity for little return, in the case of China they are pointedly evil in the way they deal.

1) Washington Post is garbage and only intend to bash Trump, so I would never trust them as a source of anything even sports box scores.

2) Trump is a genius with a Midas touch.  If he deems tariffs are a critical pillar of MAGA, then so be it.  He’s got this patriot’s full support.

I only support tariffs on products produced with child labor (defined as under 13), slave labor, or produced from stolen or violated patents.  Otherwise i believe in free trade but I support reciprocal tariffs.

Everyone wants access to US markets so obviously trump would have a lot of leverage here by threatening tariffs if other nations do not straighten up.  Trump could demand some nations improve labor laws or reduce pollution or else tariffs are put in place.  But tim schoschet and other liberals here defend free trade over improving the planet.

We should levy very high tariffs on canada to protest how the truckers were treated.  The government officials can cover it out of their personal pockets.  If they try to pass it on to the innocent people then we can do even worse.

Tariffs should be just high enough where it always financily makes more sense to buy American. Easy solution that Dems will over complicate.

Here’s what I’m reading so far in this thread, with very few exceptions:

1. Trump is for this and we trust Trump so we’re for this.
2. Liberals don’t like this so it must be good.
3. The deep state doesn’t like this so it must be good.

Isn't Biden doing something similar:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/elections/2024/05/14/biden-raises-tariffs-china-electric-cars-solar/73675733007/

WASHINGTON − President Joe Biden is hiking tariffs on electric vehicles, semiconductors and several other goods imported from China, escalating a trade war between the two world's largest economies as the administration accuses Chinese competitors of unfair practices in industries the U.S. is trying to grow.

The moves, which come amid rising tensions between the U.S. and China, are designed to protect American industries in clean energy that the administration has targeted with major investments to try to catch up with China.

Other goods from China that will face higher tariffs include solar cells, batteries, battery materials, cranes used at ports, and certain medical supplies, as well as steel and aluminum.
