What's the longest you've gone without taking a Mon-Fri off from work?

Recommended Posts

I'm currently at 15 1/2 years. :(

I take Wed. afternoons off and I can take any single or couple of days I want. But if I took a whole week off, it wouldn't be worth the mess on my desk for the next month.

That's ridiculous. A year is the longest I ever went without a yearlong vacation and it sucked. I had a week in Aruba last October and a week and a half in May when junior was born, although that was not a vacation! I'm ready for a week off now no doubt.

I can't say for sure, but I'd say probably around 4 years. When I first got out of the military I was just happy to have a job so I was really busy with work and school. Now that I'm more established I can't imagine not taking at least one straight week off per year. It's a good stress relief to just get away from it all. Taking a little vacation and leaving the company phone off can do wonders for you, even if you don't leave the house.

On the job over 30 years.

Didn't get a vacation at all last year, spent 8 days in the hospital followed by 2 weeks recovering at home. Had to cancel my March Canun trip.

Finally took a full week of this June for the honeymoon. Other than that it's just been a day off here and there.

I get 5 weeks of vacation every year, but never take more than one or two. We can sell vacation, and often need to do that.

Haven't had a raise in god knows how long.

What's up with us insurance guys? In twenty years i've taken one week off to paint my house five years ago and a week this year to go to Puerto Rico. But that was for an insurance conference for independent insurance adjusters. I do take three days off once or twice a year to hit the beach.

Add in the time you are passed out and get back to us.

That's an excellent question. Honestly, I cannot remember taking a full week like that. Has to be over ten years ago for sure. I get too anxious about missing that much work and I wind up not being able to relax. I like four day weekends though. Missing a whole week of work is tough.

I currently get eight weeks of vacation a year. :D

BUT...I'm switching over to a new job. Pays a ton more and offers a lot more room for advancement. However I'll get a lot less vacation and I probably won't be able to take it very often anyway. Woe is me. :(

I have been in current career 10+ years and now get 4 weeks vacation. Prior to that I was self employed so that time doesn't count.

In the last 10 years I have taken my vacations (and the work that piles up is insane - but I take them anyway).

However we were never allowed to take more then a week at a time so I always take the first week kids are out of school and he last week before they go back and Xmas week.

Now the BIG boss broke the barrier this year and took two consecutive weeks - so now we all are conspiring to jump on the bandwagon next year and put in for two consecutive weeks !!!

***I never have taken 2 weeks straight and I do wonder if it is a bad idea. I may kill someone or be killed :lol ***

The only full week(s) I've ever taken off were 4 years ago for a cruise and when my daughter was born 11 years ago. I always seem to do a Wednesday through Sunday.

I take a week off at least once a year and sometimes twice (I get 4 weeks vacation, 5 weeks next July) and I'm going to Orlando for 5 days starting August 21

I have a DJ gig I dj every friday and every other saturday, so I take my vacations during the week so I don't miss those gigs, as the $ is too good to give to someone else.

I DJed a booze cruise last night for $400

5 years and counting. The week I took off 5 years ago I spent putting a second-story addition on my house. Worst vacation ever. I had planned to take a week earlier this year but was back in town by Thursday so I came in Friday. I'm doing it wrong.

That depends. If you mean a week out of the office on vacation I usually do 2 a year. If you mean out of the office for a week and not checking and responding to e-mails and voice mails I have not done that since 2000 when I went to Ireland.

I never go away without having contact with work via email or whatever. that's pretty hard for anyone to pull off nowadays

Every couple of years I've taken a week off for some kind of major vacation... Went to Amsterdam once, went to Jamaica once....

I simultaneously love and hate traveling... Prob why its every couple of years I do something like that...

You're doing it wrong. This is the thread where we talk about how busy important we are and if we take any time off the company and or business would fall apart.

I usually take about 4-6 weeks off every year. But then again, I work for myself so it's not an issue.

If you count training, a couple years, but since then I try to take at least a couple weeks off every quarter. And a month in the winter. For those that have gone years without a break, how much of it is a financial decision?

Also IGW, if you already make enough to live comfortably, don't sacrifice your time for the $.

Not financial at all. It comes down to no one else in my office will do my work if I'm not there. :wall:

For any other reason than busting a$$ to make ends meet, I agree. I doubt that applies to many who choose to forego vacation, however.

Not at all, I'm salaried.

I guess it depends on the job, but I assure you it is possible once you realize the world still turns when you're away. Unless you're NorthernVike :dunno:

I've had at least 3 weeks vacation for the last 15 years - and I use my vacation time... seen too many people with hundreds of hours "banked" and then they lose them in a layoff/restructure/etc.

I bet you can find doctors who'll make similar statements about their indispensability or getting behind in their work by taking vacation. Glad there are people who are so committed and enjoy running their own business. You do enjoy it, right? Personally I'd hire an assistant.

Actually I'm burned out. But with a wife and two kids, you have to pay the bills.

I didn't start this tread to try and show how hard I work, I just wanted to know if any one else was as dumb as me and not take time off to recharge. :dunno:

Tougher when you need to support a family. Simplify your life and take a well deserved break!

The only way I can keep from burning out is by taking a sh!tload of vacation.

Next week will be the first Mon-Fri vacation in over 10 years. The wife and I do the Fri-Mon thing a few times a year but I'm really looking forward to 9 days off!

I'm into quality of life, so it isn't my plan to work insane hours for the rest of my life. But this opportunity I got was too good to pass up. In a couple years I should be able to move to something with more vacation and less hours if I want to.

I can live alright on what I make now but more would help. I guess that's probably always the case though.

I got Thursday thru Monday off this week. And I plan on doing absolutely nothing.

Other than that, the only time I took a whole week off was to fly back to Denver, pack up my sh!t, and then drive it all back to Mpls. So I don't technically count that as vacation.

Nothing wrong with working hard, just don't adapt your lifestyle so much that you need the extra cash to "survive". Its easier said than done, especially if you've got other people spending your $.

On a related note, I never understood the idea of killing oneself while young with the expectation of retiring early. Aren't there more things you can enjoy while young and able- bodied?

It is easy to say that when you make as much as you do.

However i agree with your philosphy. I am taking the girlfriend to NYC for 5 days over labor day.

I think a lot of people don't take off or are in constant contact with work even when they do take off because they think it will make them stand out as a hard worker or something. It doesnt, personally i think it makes you look like a kissass.

There is nothing sweeter than going on a vacation and truly not giving a crap about what happens while you're gone. Just scrolling through your work emails while on vacation really takes you out of that vacation mindset.

True. This is one reason one should work hard in school to train for a well paying job. Although I had the same attitude when I did research and was earning less than half my current salary. Living well below your means is always a good idea IMO.

And fvck if I don't know plenty of wealthy people who continue to bust their ass despite being miserable at their jobs.

A lot of companies allow you to sell it back at the end of the year, as long as you've used some during the year. So people will take days here and there to qualify then sell 80 hours in December. That's one hell of a nice Xmas shopping spree.
