I just shut my league down......

Recommended Posts

You can yell and scream at me but i will explain. 12 man league ( 17 year league) Six Large unpaid balances $100 plus 1 small unpaid balance.

In the past we have had one or two teams that couldn't pay full balance but most times it was paid in full by now . So I sent out email and shutdown website letting everyone know what I'm doing. Good thing most of these guys weren't real friends anyway.

Ok , now yell at me.

Fyi, i'm commish and don't pay to play and I'm 7-5 with a playoff spot.

Better give that cheese back to the guys who paid or they may come put a dead horse's head in your bed. It's just business.

Another league where the commish doesn't pay? It's not like you have to do the stats by hand like in the old days. Good riddance, and lesson learned - pay by draft day or you don't draft.

And BTW, way to screw those guys who paid like they were supposed to. Douche move.

I don't get it. Now no one will ever pay. You just destroyed a league that lasted for 17 years.

Our league usually runs $200-300 per team and we have never paid until the season was finished and everyone has always gotten paid. Owesies have been worked out between owners and usually settled in the next year's money. Most of us only know 1 or 2 guys on any kind of elevated level and we all live in different cities and states and countries.

What we decided was it was best for everyone to be trusted with their part, rather than to trust one person with the whole season's pot. Since the season isn't over and you are obviously the one holding the money, what is the big deal? If team A wins $100 for the season and Team B loses $100 then simply let Team B pay Team A directly. If he doesn't he is out next year and likely can be embarrassed into paying through social media etc.

I would apologize, restart the site and talk to the other teams about the issue and the possible remedies. Blame the outrage on your wife, girlfriend, dog, mother, etc. Everyone will relate.

First off, nobody cares. Yes I know you're sad that your league is gone. We don't play in your league though and your story has no wider applicability, so... :dunno:

Second off, to the extent that I do care it's just enough to say that you should have been paying an entry fee just as everyone else was expected to pay. What kind of bum expects other people to pay for him to play fantasy football?

Blah blah blah so I took my football and went home.

The league I used to run (which was a lot more than $100)... I got so sick of chasing money... we collected a year in advance. The money went into a CD and the interest paid out to the high point total for the year.

If you we're playing for free... collecting the money is your job.

Why in this day and age would the commish not pay? Are you still pulling the Monday papers to tally up the stats?

Lol..Why would you even post this then write "OK, now yell at me"? On this board, if you post topical discussions about fantasy football, you get blasted with 20 "No one cares. STFU". This is something that literally no one would care about except as another excuse to call someone else an idiot on the internet. Oh and btw, you're an idiot. Play-offs won't be over for a month. When they are.. you just say winners don't get paid till everyone pays up and things will sort themselves out. If someone really really doesn't want to pay up, hes out of the league next year and the winner takes the hit.

It is unfortunate that you reacted this way - I understand that you were probably angry and frustrated, but in any leadership role, it's your job to work for the best outcome possible - and shutting the league down is a losing proposition for everyone.

You could have managed with a reduced payout.

There are a number of ways you could have kept the league running while holding your ground against the delinquents.

I had trouble concentrating at work all last week because because I was fretting about weather or not this league would be shut down. Now that this is clarified, I'm certainly not going to yell at the OP because I should finally be able to get a good nights rest (for the first time in several weeks) because I won't be tossing and turning worrying about the fate of this league.

as the commish of 150$ league, I dont pay at all.

however, I pay out of pocket for the Draft Board, League fees on a paysite, and all you can eat and drink draft party.

It usually runs me about 300$

1 guy in my league actually complained that I didnt pay, and everyone else in the league held him down while I hit him with a sock of soap

No kidding, what a loser this guy is. Cheap azz Commish!

At worst, I would've given everyone's money back if a guy who didn't pay won. And if a guy that did pay won, give them the money it cost.

For the Free-rolling Commissioners,

Are you eligible to win prize money? Mind-boggling. Shocked that anyone will play in such leagues, especially when buy in may be $100+

And for "Supplies" Commish, spare us your expenses. You chose the role, so if it's a few bucks out of your pocket, so be it. There are other, better ways to reduce your personal costs for hosting draft parties and such.

Are you like 19? You are probably the type of guy that still asks for gas money from friends too. Grow up, Peter Pan.

Looks like Ramrock achieved his goal of having everyone here tell him what a doosh he is. Seriously though, I don't get this no-pay thing in this day and age of the interwebs, but I presume that part of your consulting fee is to work to collect the money?

That free ride is your compensation for doing your job. You're an employee of the league. Your employers expect you to manage the league. This includes collecting money. You didn't get the job done for them. You're fired.

(While the OP opted to make this an ego-stroke, "cool story, bro" thread, there are many of us who have wrestled with the money issue in leagues where the owners are real flesh and blood people who are part of our non-fantasy world lives, not just a bunch of anonymous Internet screen names. Had the OP asked what he had done wrong and sought advice on how to do it right in the unlikely event he gets another chance, what would that advice be - other than "knock on door, punch in face?")

These free rider commish storys just make me laugh,, Im not a rich guy, Im a truck driver for a living but have been commish of 3 leagues, one of which has been in existence for 17 yrs.

Every year I throw down all the goods, draft party, including smoked pork butts, which I have done every single season and all the sides. My owners see what I put into the drafts and have all contributed over the years, some more than others. Last year I even hired a stripper for out draft party for the original TNL league from 17 yrs, and I got a little too buzzed and ended up throwing cash at the stripper that happened to be in my pocket from 2 owners that payed me at the draft.... 300 bones... ouch.

I didnt even realize what I had done until the following sobering morning.

Running a league is on you as commish, and if you are only doing it to play for free you are a douche thats already been used.

Why not just tell the people who wouldn't pay they wouldn't be eligible for the league next season? I've seen that done in a few leagues. You weren't paying anyway, so how exactly did this hurt you in any way? So the winners this year take less of a payout.... Lesson learned. In my leagues, we have a defined cut off date for payment that is posted on the site. If the league isn't paid two weeks prior to the season, you are out. That gives us time to find a new owner. If someone just lost a job, which happened to several owners back in 2009, we work with them on a payment schedule. Shutting down a league that has been around for 17 years seems like a bad call. Obviously people cared about the league enough to stay in it that long. As the Commish, and a non-paying one at that, it was your duty to set the payment deadline. You should at least have to pay your portion based on that screw up alone. As someone above posted, it isn't like a Commish has much to do now. We quit using pencils and newspapers in the late 90's. So what exactly is your job as Commish that makes it ok for you to not pay? It obviously isn't collecting money or making sure the league is run appropriately with the correct owners. What exactly do you do? Arrange the names on the leader board? Re-add a player that was accidentally dropped? Oh wait, you terminate a league that has been around for 17 years because you failed to set proper expectations. Sweet. You should put that on your Commish resume and apply elsewhere.

Most of you don't seem to have a real clue, bringing up the no pay commish thing has no barring on the conversation , the commish hasn't payed in the 17 years. With that being said, I tried to collect on draft day , which I had two yes two people pay in full, Then spent the next 14 weeks trying to collect the remaining payments having only three out of the other six even bothering to send any payments . Weekly message board post were relayed , no replys , phone calls were made no replys. Fu#k last years commish was telling me how one of the guys in the league never even paid last year. Oh one other note now that I'm thinking about it I guess since I'm returning the money to all that paid anyways I'm the one who got stuck paying $79.95 website (myfantasyleague) therefore for the first time we've been using a website it didn't come out of the league fund. So for those of you that had constructive comments thanks .. the rest can go back to their 8 man leagues

Yeah but you gotta eat the website cost in this situation, you have to pay back the guys that did pay in full because it really isn't their fault. Most leagues are on yahoo and they actually have a little tab for league fees now, and it's free. I would just put the league on yahoo in the future so at least there are no league costs. I didn't actually think anybody ever paid for the actual league website. I hate yahoo but most people want to use that anyway.

$100-300 is a decent chunk of change admittedly, it's not like people should just be throwing that amount into a toilet and flushing it down. But it's also not really THAT much money that if you wanted to come up with it you couldn't. I won a baseball league this year and a guy told me he couldn't afford $100 because of the sequester. The problem was it had been weeks since he should have had the money, and those federal employees got that money back anyway. It's all just excuses, a lot of people get salty for losing, so you either have to collect before the draft or you may never collect at all.
