Frank M 181 Posted June 20, 2015 In hind-site, this was probably the wrong thread to state my disdain of Lincoln. I am 49 years old, and this is the first time I've ever heard of anyone having disdain for Lincoln, possibly the greatest American and arguably the greatest president this country has ever known. wiffleball 4,797 Posted June 20, 2015 Sure, in retrospect Lincoln SEEMS cool, but if you lived during the time, you'd have hated him. Under his tenure, the cost of cotton balls alone rose 900%.

It didn't subside until polyester and other synthetic fibers were invented. Once that happened, people were really able to see Lincoln for the great president that he was. naomi 360 Posted June 20, 2015 This is something I have been strenuously advocating and earnestly hope that you actually leverage this approach as well. I would hope that most adults interpret prefacing something with "there's definite spin in this" as an indicator that "willing acceptance" doesn't exactly describe how it's being approached. I have no idea what message it is that you are seeking to convey. Regardless, my heart warmed at the notion that someone like worms sees the value in not blindly subscribing to a single line of thought....given his preponderance to do this very thing in other instances......to me, it indicates the potential for growth past some of the sick ideals he has put forth in the past. IGotWorms 4,063 Posted June 21, 2015 Are you serious when you go into this mode? Sorry but I just expect a lot more from someone with a journalism degree or really anyone who is intelligent (you are, so that at least is a compliment). There's been citation to primary sources in this thread where the southern states said exactly why they went to war. Then you come in with some cockamamie revisionist bullsh1t from someone with an obvious agenda. Which you even admitted yourself. So I'm not sure how you expected people to respond

Then you come in with some cockamamie revisionist bullsh1t from someone with an obvious agenda. Which you even admitted yourself. So I'm not sure how you expected people to respond Read South Carolina's statement in the links you linked while talking about MDC's. They're talking about policy regarding slavery as the straw breaking the camel's back. SC was the first state to secede. The 'argument to mine' that I mentioned had to do with what was seen as ulterior motivated interest in slavery policy to exert control over the South amidst mounting economic tension. If we were doing more than being conversational on a message board then you would read the thoughts and worldview from both sides to understand it as well as official declarations. In a nutshell that argument contends slavery was the flashpoint, and there was a lot of tender piled up. "Then you come in" is misconstruing the flow of conversation (unless I missed an earlier discussion). That conversation preceded MDC's links. That "cockamamie revisionist bullsh1t" had some notes of interest, but there was a fair enough amount of cockamamie revisionist bullshit in it that it needed a disclaimer. That was like saying 'sift through this for the interesting claims.' There's a lot of inconvenient history of the North that is dismissed with the notion it was about righteous sensibility foremost. I understood what he was saying and would easily be able to reproduce it. However, that is something you would see if someone was writing/typing an essay paper. wiffleball 4,797 Posted June 22, 2015 Why do people insist on calling it The Civil War? It was The War of Northern Aggression. Compared to subsequent conflicts, it really was a civil war. "No, I insist, you are a guest in our country - please - instruct your men to fire upon our lines first." "That is so very civil of you, but as you say, it is your land - I insist, you fire first, we're happy to follow suit." "You are so very civil. I am quite fond of your manners. You would not believe how uncivil those savage Indians are!" "War is nothing if not civil. Cheers!"

NewbieJr 541 Posted June 22, 2015 The Confederate flag is a symbol of supporting slavery. Period. It may not have started out that way, but that's what it's become. And just because Billy Bob had a great great grandfather who fought in the war, he also needs to realize what the flag represents before letting it fly on his trailer property. Hitler's mustache went permanently out of style because it became a symbol for Naziism. The Confederate flag is a symbol of black hatred just as the mustache is a symbol of Jewish hatred. People have enough sense and class not to wear their mustache that way. We're still waiting for dome southerners to do the same.
KSB2424 3,173 Posted June 22, 2015 I live in NC and hardly ever see the Confederate Flag. Maybe once in a blue moon I'll see it on the back of some pickup truck, but that's it. It's a flag in the history books. I do think, over the years it's symbol has been distorted a bit, however I don't see the point of flying it. It's not a state flag, it's not the national flag. It's part of history, so do what you do with relics. Hang it in museums and in history books for presevation. Defiantly flying it around at the Capitol is just stupid. Thornton Melon 648 Posted June 22, 2015 Well, I don't think anyone has ever accused the NRA of being a classy organization... http://news.yahoo.com/nra-executive-suggests-slain-charleston-pastor-blame-gun-043458974.html Yeah, it was classless. He should have worded it differently, and not called out the pastor, but rather the law itself. His point was valid. This psychopath wasn't sitting at his computer researching SC law thinking "Damn, I really wanted to massacre a bunch of people in a church, but I see I'm not allowed to bring guns there." Patriotsfatboy1 1,433 Posted June 22, 2015 Real aggressive sending a ship to drop off supplies in charleston harbor, only to be fired on by college kids. When I went to college in Georgia, I was called a Yankee. The kids were taught in school about "The War of Northern Aggression". Not just joking about it amongst friends or at the local KKK rally, but in school, that is the term that they used. Silly. This is not an unbiased source, but it does have some good history points. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2013/05/06/1207171/-Mything-the-Point-The-War-of-Northern-Aggression#
