parrot 789 Posted October 2, 2017 Do you know what a semi-auto is? It's any gun where you can pull the trigger and it reloads itself for automatic firing. All that distinguishes it from full auto is the need to pull the trigger on each individual discharge. That covers most guns. I know exactly what a semi-auto is and they don't include single-shots, over-unders, side-by-sides, bolt-actions, lever-actions, pump-actions, or revolvers. Those constitute a large number of guns out there. I own 8 guns and exactly 1 of them is a semi-auto.

fricker66 91 Posted October 2, 2017 He was known to local authorities. I am guessing mental illness. Pretty sure that the "known to local authorities" aspect of this was fake news. He was a 64-year-old who lived in a retirement community 80 miles away. He liked to go to the casinos to gamble. He owned and managed apartment buildings, where he made his money. He was a licensed pilot and owned 2 planes, so he is not poor. His family have been quoted and have said nothing of mental illness.

His family have been quoted and have said nothing of mental illness. Huh. Well, I really don't know then. He doesn't appear to have formal ties to terrorism but I suppose we will learn more in the next few days. I'll be interested to learn where he got his weapons too. edjr 5,602 Posted October 2, 2017 You can make a bomb with household ingredients. can you also shoot it from the 32 floor of a building? get it into a concert with 40,000 people? Can make a paper airplane too

You fly them in on drones, or fill van and drive through the gate. ISIS does it all the time. http://www.technobuffalo.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/The-more-you-know.png

There were also reports that he authorities had characterized him as a "lone wolf", which would suggest the 2 people story is fake or was misreported. His family have been quoted and have said nothing of mental illness. He shot up 500+ people. I don't think we need a PhD to figure out he was mentally ill. I also refuse to believe that someone capable of performing an act like this just snapped one day. You have to have a lot of rage in your body to pull off something like this. Somewhere, that had to have showed...even a little bit...in his daily life. Having said that, I also think that the media needs to stop rushing out to these people's family members within 12 hours of an event like this taking place. First and foremost, I don't give a sh!t about hearing defense of this animal. Second though, it puts these people in an unbelievably difficult position so soon afterwards. The last thing I'd want to do if my brother went postal is have microphones plastered in my face asking me how and why he did it.

Somewhere, that had to have showed...even a little bit...in his daily life. I would agree that he had to be planning this for some time, but sometimes folks can mask mental illness very effectively. It sounds like his brothers didn't have much interaction with him, so I would not be surprised if neither of them had a hint about this. I only talk to my sister a few times per year, and we do not get to a level where I could evaluate her mental condition, so I am taking it from that perspective. It will be interesting to hear what the "roommate" and others in the retirement community have to say (if we ever find out) since they were around him. If nothing else, I wish these types of incidents would also result in people having discussions with one another, particularly family, about their mental health. Nowadays, so many people are so enraged at trivial disinformation they read/hear/see and make irrational judgments. An example on this message board was Newbie. I get no liking Trump. I get not liking certain politicians of a different party. But that dude would literally post stuff condoning, and calling for, physical harm towards people. He's not alone either. The toxicity in the comment sections of articles now is over the top, and it's from both sides. Insults and blame have replaced civility and logical discourse. I wonder if the increased autonomy we all take for granted has contributed, even in a small manner, towards the increase in these animals.

IMMensaMind 460 Posted October 2, 2017 I found your statement completely false, as anyone who knows anything about guns knows. What 1977 has to do with anything I don't have a clue.No need to get clueless. If most guns sold since 1977 are semi-auto, semi-auto guns comprise the majority of guns on the street. If it makes you happy, though, I'll amend my general statement for specificity: nearly every gun that would be considered a threat on the street is a semi-automatic. Happy now? I can include a typo in some of my posts to tide you over if you wish.
IGotWorms 3,359 Posted October 2, 2017 Have we figured out who to blame yet? I don't know how I'm supposed to react until I figure out whether this is the right's fault or the left's fault or the blacks or Muslims or what. TIA
IMMensaMind 460 Posted October 2, 2017 The interview with his brother shows a guy who is gobsmacked by this. I wonder something. How easy is it to create this entire story out of ether? To 'lose' a scapegoat; to create this destruction. Is a Government fully willing to hide corruption also completely capable of pulling off a horrific act like this to sway public opinion for a very specific strategic purpose? I think this possibility also has to be considered. I don't think that Occam's Razor would be offended.

GobbleDog 822 Posted October 2, 2017 I love how you actually think you are making a good arguement but all you are doing is taking this out to left field. You already know the answer, stop it. I don't understand the disconnect. People shouldn't have grenades and rocket launchers because of the potential carnage. But the carnage from guns is acceptable? That's ridiculous. What drives me insane about gun-right folks is the total lack of critical thinking. If hypothetically, gun violence rates were a fraction of what they are, I'd probably agree with gun rights. But if hypothetically gun violence rates were 10 times higher, gun-right folks wouldn't care. No amount of carnage is too much. There's no debating with people who "think" like that.
