I'm certain environmental factors would come into play. I don't suspect anyone is throwing these away now after one use though and if removed improperly you could contaminate your hands, were the masks contaminated. One thing that is good that my wife pointed out is that this disease is a relative of pneumonia and pneumonia doesn't like warm weather and sunshine. Normally I'm in shorts by late January, not yet though, highs are in the upper 60s and lows are in the 40s. Hopefully we get to the mid 70s and on to the 80s soon.
