(CNN)The United States is closer than ever to beating Covid-19, with half the country vaccinated and more restrictions lifting.

But we're as far as ever from knowing how this virus, which shut down the world, came to be -- which is as frightening as anything, since there's growing suggestions that it didn't just occur naturally, as many experts have long argued.

The US, with increasing urgency, is calling for more study, warning about the stakes for future pandemics, and more openly considering the idea that mistakes or an accident in a Chinese lab caused the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chinese government says case closed.

A US intelligence report found that several researchers at China's Wuhan Institute of Virology fell ill in November 2019 and had to be hospitalized, a new detail about the severity of their symptoms. It's not clear the researchers contracted Covid-19 and the lab strongly denied the report, calling it a lie to push the so-called lab-leak theory for the disease origin.

Scientists affiliated with the institute have previously said the institute did not come into contact with Covid-19 until December 30.

 

The US had actually provided some funding for the study of coronaviruses and their transmission through bats, which had made it to the Wuhan Institute of Virology. 

On Capitol Hill Tuesday, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said it would have been a "dereliction of duty" not to fund earlier coronavirus research in bats in China.

"You don't want to study bats in Fairfax County, Virginia, to find out what the animal-human interface is that might lead to a jumping of species," Fauci said, adding the US had to go "where the action is."

I mean, to me, assuming it was accidental, it probably could’ve happened anywhere. But it did happen there (if the lab theory were true), and so perhaps they should somehow be responsible for their negligence. Which did result in many millions dying worldwide.

We’ve established that the WHO is China’s biotch; I’m sure we’ve got the WHO under control as well.  Somehow that needs to stop — we need some oversight with teeth for all countries.

Near term I’m mostly thinking of safety/security protocols based on level of research performed.  I suspect the lesser of Worms’ two evils (unintentional release from the lab) and we need to make sure that never happens again.

How can we impose safety/security protocols on China though? Seems like there’s gotta be something behind it. Maybe worldwide condemnation would suffice but I’m not sure they’d really care

I have always believed this came from the lab in Wuhan. It did not even have to be on purpose. Bad quality control happens in all facets of life and they typically go unnoticed. In this case I would bet that lab workers ate at the local wet market all the time. Ya know....to stop by for a pangolin on a stick or something tasty like that and carried something with them they did not know about.

I was attempting to isolate the “how” (scientific focus) from the “what” and “why” (political, maybe military focus).  The former should be easier, I would hope.

Yeah you’re probably right. I mean, this type of research is going to occur. There’s just no way of putting a lid on it even if you wanted to. So it does seem that enhanced safety measures would be the way to go.

What scares me is imagine something similar happened, but with a bioweapon. Like something actually designed and meant to kill as many people as possible, as efficiently as possible

It most likely came from an accidental release from the wuhan lab studying bat coronaviruses.

There is nothing you can really do if you are the US. Maybe some weak sanctions or tariffs.  If proven you could ask them to donate vaccines to poorer countries, but their vaccines are not the best.

We need labs to study viruses that can cause future pandemics and hopefully this is the wakeup call developing countries need to increase safety protocol.

The truth is probably 10x worse that we imagine.  The Chinese created a lie about wet markets and then destroyed one to cover any investigating. There is a minimum of 10 days but probably actually 2 months of keeping this under wraps,  while they tried to squelch it, but obviously couldn't. The entire hypothesis put forth by the WHO was based solely on information provided by the Chinese. They did no direct investigation. But this story won't die, will it. So much so, the WHO lists it as a possibility,  and Flip flop Fauci, has been forced to admit that he has been pushing a narrative,  not a scientific investigation.

Supposedly it was to help develop vaccines.

Apparently the state department did warn about the safety conditions at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in 2018, so I guess we could claim they weren’t following proper safety protocols even if we were involved in the funding.

Absolutely, and it is suggested that someone catches a new corona virus everyday. But, I find it impossible to believe that viral scientists are not trying to get ahead of the curve by trying to create new mutations. Right? The thought that they are merely studying what they find sort of goes against what they are. But that is what they are claiming. And my question about why they are in China was rhetorical. They are there because it's virus central, but also because they have almost no oversight.
