Problem is, by the time you know you're sick, you've been contagious for days. 

Not to mention there are way too many self important people in the states who just couldn't possibly stay home when they're sick. The company would fall apart if they missed a couple of days.

I feel like this needs to be said.   

The media should report on this, people should take extra precautions., the gov't should take extra steps to slow the spread until warmer weather and/or a vaccine.  You should pay attention as it will affect business, health, etc. 

With that said the fear mongering in the media, sheer panic by people, etc. canceling schools and games, its all out of hand and complete over-reaction

If it spreads like it did in China or is doing in Italy, the real problem is that health care systems will be overwhelmed. Even if only a small segment of the population will have serious illness from the virus, that segment is much more than enough to back up intensive care units and ERs nationwide (which then limits/prevents care for people critically ill for other reasons).
