It's beyond me to understand that level of thinking. Up until about 15 years ago, outside of my regular agenda, I took classes occasionally at various colleges just because I was interested in something and wanted to either learn about it or look more into it. If I were to sit in on any classes today and get this type of bullshlt fed to me, I really don't know what I would do. Quit the class and get a refund? Form a study group and see where that goes? Get involved in a campus movement against that crap? "Take [the teacher] out behind the gym and beat the hell out of him"?

I only know one police officer, and I hate to be a digby mentioning my brother in law, but he took a job for the city of Denver because it paid significantly more than working for Laramie, Wyoming. Minneapolis will get good officers again if they pay more than the surrounding areas.

It is more than money. If you are not getting the support that you need from your elected leaders and they have already proven that they will throw you under the bus, then why would you make such a move? I have a several friends who are police officers in various places and they would not chase the money in this situation, but they are also much closer to retirement than starting out.

Of course pay matters.  But Minneapolis, like Seattle, is neutering their police force and actually putting them in danger.  I can see a significant pay difference between Laramie, Wyoming and Denver.  I suspect the pay difference between Denver and LIttleton CO (where I live about 10 miles south of Denver) is significantly less and the Littleton PD is not putting their officers in danger.  I'm not saying Denver's is but if Denver did start acting like Seattle with regard to how they treat their police department I could see him moving to one of the suburbs around Denver that doesn't treat their officer's that way.

You’re oversimplifying things, working off an old model. This amount of anti police rhetoric and direct actions against them has never existed before. Just saying more money will fix it isn’t the simple solution it once was. Places like Minneapolis will just lower the already low standards to get more bodies. They aren’t concerned with getting high quality applicants.  But the public and politicians just think about filling spots, not the quality of the person that does. As long as there is diversity. They don’t have to pay anymore than anyone else. Just hire whoever applied, as long as there is diversity.

Money always matters. But so does safety.  The people you deal with.  Probably understaffed in these cities so you will be expected to do more or work more hours.  

So in these cities they may up their pay and still be understaffed.  So now theit little experiment would save no money by defunding and end up with less officers.  

Like teaching....if I were in these professions I would rather make less and live in the country.  Dealing with better people and possibly a lower cost of living is worth it for both.  Some people will chase the money for sure...the young people with no experience.

Quality of life is important. I would take a job at 1/2 to 3/4 of what I make now if it would reduce the stress and hours I put in currently. That's all in the works though, so....
