Never had?  All of them except for Crown Royal.  Bleh.  Anyway, this should be a good thread with the 4th of July coming up.  I have plenty of friends and relatives who are drinkers, and some names people post here could be a suggestion to have at the my cousin's bbq that he has every year.

Hit up your local ghetto spot. It'll be right up your alley. You'll love it.

Evan green was the well bourbon and pretty much every bar around here, and they discontinued it,a major shake up.

Just discovered it a week ago, mixes well with cream.

I had wanted to try Angel's Envy bourbon but never got to it.  Not sure I'll be drinking much if at all in the future.

Old Crow

I ended up with a fifth of old crow back in college once. Even to my unrefined 18 year old pallette,  it was... bad.

But being a good little college lush, I drank every last drop.

The worst whiskey I've ever had was very old Barton. We ended up with a handle of that (my older friends thought it was funny to buy us the worst booze possible rather than what we ordered.)

We tried everything to get rid of that crap. Cherry jello shots worked ok.

My fil had an old time liquor cabinet and then he died there was a 30 year old unopened handle of this stuff  We chucked it. And I'll drink nearly anything.

Good stuff? I’ve never even seen a bottle of Weller anything ever. I’ve bought in my area Pappy, Blantons pops up several times a year as does Stagg Jr. Weller is a Unicorn.

Powers John’s Lane cask strength (also only available outside the US)

Gold Spot 13 year old Generations Edition

Redbreast Missouri Oak edition (this recently released version of one of the most famous single pot still brands is finished in virgin oak casks from the Ozark mountains)

Evan Williams Bottled in Bond Bourbon is my bourbon for mixed drinks like old fashioneds and manhattans.  The reason is that there is very little difference among "bottled in bond" whiskeys, and the regulations ensure that they are of good quality:

Quote

The term "bottled in bond" (BIB) refers to a label for American-made distilled spirits that meet certain legal requirements. These requirements include:

  • Aging
The spirit must be aged for at least four years in a federally bonded warehouse under government supervision.

  • Proof
The spirit must be bottled at exactly 100 proof (50% ABV).

  • Labeling
The spirit must be clearly labeled with the name of the distillery that made it and the location of the distillery and bottling.

  • Distillation
The spirit must be distilled by a single distiller during a single distilling season.

The Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897 was a reaction to the widespread adulteration of American whiskey. The act made the federal government responsible for guaranteeing the authenticity of spirits, and it also provided tax incentives for producers.

The Bottled-in-Bond label is considered to be one of the earliest examples of consumer protection law under government supervision.

If I'm going to mix it with simple syrup or sweet vermouth, why pay more for a name?  :dunno:

I posted this 3+ years ago as I was going through chemo.  I'd like to tell my old self:  self, you made it longer than anyone thought, and you have since tried Angel's Envy, and you very much like it.

Angel's Envy is finished in port casks (I think) so it adds a little extra sweetness to the whiskey.

I've never had Weller either.  It has a higher wheat content, which makes it mellower than regular bourbons.  Maker's Mark is perhaps the most well known "wheated" bourbon.

We've got a boutique liquor store here called Trevor's which has its own bar/restaurant.  They carry a lot of good whiskeys, including the line of Wellers, in the bar.  Unfortunately I usually go during the day  for lunch and not drinking (it's by the Mayo I usually go to).  If I ever find myself there later in the day, I may ask for a taste of the Wellers.
