Golfers -- what are your 14 clubs?

Recommended Posts

I finally broke down and bought a new bag, my first cart bag, which I love after two uses.

Sun Mountain

One of the benefits is that it has14 club slots which are all lined to keep the shafts separate.  So I put my clubs into the new bag and... I've got 15 clubs.  Oops, I need to get rid of one.

My purpose for the thread is not anything about makes or models,  but what is your general club layout and why?

My 15 are,:

Driver 9 degree
3 wood, 15 degree
hybrid, 19 degree
2-9 irons (8 total)
PW (54 degree, 100 yards)
SW (58 degree, 70 yards)
LW (60 degree, 50 yards)
putter

IMO it's down to the 2 iron or the SW.  The 2 iron I never use from the fairway or tee, but it has become my go-to club for punching low under trees, which happens more than I would like.  I could use the 3 for that with not much negative I suppose.  The SW is flat bottomed so not a "special" rounded wedge, so it's really just a 3rd wedge.  I can use the LW from the sand; heck maybe I should regardless.  I love the LW for flop shots though, so I can't see getting rid of that.

Comments appreciated

Wait.  14?  I have a driving iron (15°), a 5-iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter.  Why on earth would you need 10 other clubs?  Those bags must be heavy!

You don’t need to have a 2 iron. A typical 2 iron is 18 degrees. You’ve got this covered with your hybrid

Not to say you need your LW either. I hardly ever hit mine but my SW is 56*

54 is a lot of loft for a PW. My Gap wedge is 52. Normal PW is 47ish

Yeah my first reaction was the two iron before I saw any responses looks like that’s probably the way to go

Driver 9.5*

3 wood 14.5*

3 hybrid 19*

4 iron - PW

GW 52*

SW 56*

LW 60*

Putter

I could remove my 3 wood, LW and possibly even my 4 iron and never miss a beat. My least used clubs.

For this to make sense you really need yardages. Like my 4 iron - 3 wood is just a mishmash of yardages.

I have a 5 wood also that I may swap in if I am playing a course I may need it or in a scramble.  But I find little use for any woods normally.    I with I wasmuch more accurate with a 3 wood than my driver so I could just go to the 3 wood off thr tee if I run into struggles with thr driver.  But it is basically the same accuracy so I don't bother.  I always have several other wedges in thr basement.  Sometimes I will bring one out and swap it in.

Thanks to all so far, but for this in particular -- my first reaction was 4 wedges, interesting... close behind was what is the angle of the PW, 50?  That's maybe my 9, even 8, I'd have to check (I play Ping i3 oSize from long ago FWIW).

But then my last thought is the lack of a 3 iron as well... I'm thinking of whacking that instead of the 2, and keeping the 2 for my rescue low burner.  I very rarely play the 3 from the fairway/tee either, unless I want to beat a tee shot low into a stiff wind, and I can do that with the 2 as well.

I also have a shorter response prior where I said you can ditch your 2 iron if you use a 3 hybrid and pondered your PW being 54 degrees. That’s a lot of loft. Mine is 47 degrees and I always thought standard pitching wedges were in that 45-48 degree range.

so technically I just view my PW as one more iron in my set. I bought my irons 3–PW.

it’s all filling in the gaps from there. 52, 56 and 60 degree wedges. Some golfers opt for a 54 and 58 degree set up. Where 54 is their sand wedge. 54 is your PW. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t carry my three iron because my 3h is so versatile. I can choke down a little on it, play an easy fade… for me it’s to the point that I rarely even hit my 4 iron

You may want to double check your lofts. A quick google search shows the ping i3 OS pitching wedge as 47 degrees. Which gives you an 11 degree gap to your sand wedge.

Thanks, yeah.  I googled that and saw the same.  Odd as I have a specific memory of the lofts, but I'm old so... anyway my SW definitely hits closer to my LW, so let's call that a GW.

Apparently me and some Mexican pro are the only golfers who need to do long low punches from the rough. :D

I'm inclined to keep the 2 and ditch the 3 at this point; it has more value.  I can ease up a little on the hybrid and get close enough to the 3 distance; at that length I'm 98.4% hoping to just hit it straight and kinda long.

If I were setting up a bag today from scratch I'd generally do what a lot of the guys here have listed (who I know are avid golfers) and have more hybrids, less long irons at the top.

You can hit a knock down with the 3 by playing it farther back in your stance.  I'd keep the 3 if you're only punching out with the 2.

Thanks, yeah, that seems like the right thing to do. But I have this weird affinity to the 2, in part because my wife got it for me as a gift 20+ years ago to go with my then new i3 set, but also because it seems a little longer and heavier and more hybrid-like then you would expect from a slightly-longer club in a set.  It's probably all mental, I get that -- it's the same S/N as my set, which Ping is (at least back then) uniquely qualified to match.

My plan is to try the 3 as the punch out club in the next few rounds, maybe on the range as well, and see how it goes.
