Should Tua retire?

Recommended Posts

3 concussions in 1 year… maybe he should be worried about serious brain damage?

Hmm, hadn't realized that.  Yes, he should retire.  Just looked it up and he has made $25M so far.

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/tua-tagovailoa-47598/cash-earnings/ (pretty cool site for this info btw).

Presuming he wouldn't have to pay back a prorated portion of his bonus, that's plenty to live on.  With a functioning brain as a bonus

I wonder how long you have to play in order to get a medical  pension or just a pension in general from the NFL.

You all serious?

Tua is too fragile for the NFL game and gets tossed around like a rag doll. A couple more concussions and he is looking at serious brain damage if not already.

At a minimum he needs to take the rest of the season off.  Concussions are exponentially damaging, and I'm sure the protocol isn't exhaustive.

In high school, athletes sometimes take weeks or months to return, much more precautionary

He's on my dynasty team. Rub some dirt on it and tough it out is my vote.

The players of the 80s laugh.  Hell the 90s.  Many guys making money talking about football pregame probably recieved as many concussions Tua has this year....in a week or 2.

Not saying brain damage is cool.  Thats his call.  Maybe sit for the year and learn how to protect yourself.  He has no idea how to protect himself.

And this is the reason the game has become so soft

Because players don’t want to be retarded at age 40?

It’s almost 2023, one would think we’d have helmets that work.  Get Elon on it, will be done by next season,

There is no helmet possible that can stop your brain from hitting your skull

I don’t blame players who put their long term health over $ or a game.

I think there's been a bit of an overreaction to CTE.  Most retired NFL players that were smart with their money are doing fine.

Maybe. But in Tua’s case I couldn’t blame him for considering retirement.

He should probably figure out a way to ride out another year or two without actually playing, or not playing much. Get a bit more $$ then call it good

I once got mad at NFL players for holding out to try and get the most money.  I don’t anymore. They take the beatings and should get what they can while they can. The teams will toss them aside when the time comes. They have proven that again and again.

Definitely shouldn't play again this year. That's a no brainer....I mean that's obvious.

Try again next year but one more trip to the tent then it's time to call it a career.  Should already be set for life financially so $$ shouldn't really be a factor.

He should not retire.  He should learn how to protect himself when he's getting hit.

NFL players who were forced to retire after suffering...
  • #5 Chris Borland (San Francisco 49ers)
  • #4 Kyle Fitts (Chicago Bears & Arizona Cardinals)
  • #3 Jordan Reed (Washington Commanders & San Francisco 49ers)
  • #2 Ali Marpet (Tampa Bay Buccaneers)
  • #1 Luke Kuechly (Carolina Panthers)

I agree.  And that isn't saying CTE isn't serious or that players shouldn't care about their health.

Yes. I had Waddle this year so I kept up with the dolphins all year (loved watching Waddle play). If Tua has any regards to his safety he’d retire. Let’s not forget that this wasn’t in the span of a year. This is 3 all within a month or two of each other. That’s too many in one year and far too many for how often it happened

You still write checks at the grocery store, don't you?

Point being, of course there may be....just not yet.  That's the whole point of innovation, technology and entrepreneurship.

That's easy to say, harder to do if he hasn't worked on it until now.

No doubt in my mind he should retire.  He's playing with fire at this point.  25 million is going to do you no good if you can't be happy.

That's using your head.

Tua barely even got hit on 2 of the 3 concussion plays. Not sure what he could have done better to not get concussed.
