When folk music ebbed in popularity, overwhelmed by the British invasion, Mr. Lightfoot began writing ballads aimed at a broader audience. He scored one hit after another, beginning in 1970 with the heartfelt “If You Could Read My Mind,” inspired by the breakup of his first marriage.

Agreed.  Also haunting but in a beautiful way is "If you could read my mind."  Every time I hear it I think about how they don't write songs like that any more.

I have heard many of his songs hundreds of times, my Dad loved Gordon Lightfoot. I have them on various Spotify lists, Apple Music, etc and always love when they pop up. Legend.

He wrote some great songs and had the voice for them.

Last time I worked one of his shows, he did something I’d never seen a performer do.
During his set he took a minute to address the audience and then pulled out his billfold, and removed a piece of paper.
He then read the names of the musicians in his band.

Heard a podcast about the Edmund Fitzgerald. Being from Florida, I didn't never heard of it. Apparently it's notorious among yall Yankees.

I vaguely remember the song. The "crew error" I guess was changed because some hatches were later discovered to have been tied down. But not all of them per the podcast if I remember right. At the very least, captain error risking a horrific storm like that.

Huh?  The lead singer thanks the band mates by name in every concert I’ve been to, and they don’t need to look at a piece of paper to remember their names.
