Florida Moves to End Vaccine Mandates for Schoolchildren

The state would be the first to scrap requirements that children be vaccinated

Florida plans to become the first state to end all vaccine mandates, including for schoolchildren, rejecting a practice that public health experts have credited for decades with limiting the spread of infectious diseases.

Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo, the Florida surgeon general, made the announcement on Wednesday alongside Gov. Ron DeSantis, a Republican. Mr. DeSantis rose to national prominence during the coronavirus pandemic, and over time he has espoused increasingly anti-vaccine views.

“Who am I to tell you what your child should put in their body?” Dr. Ladapo, a vocal denigrator of vaccines, said to applause during an event on Wednesday in Valrico, Fla., near Tampa. “Your body is a gift from God.”

He added that the administration would be “working to end” all vaccine mandates. “Every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery,” Dr. Ladapo said, without elaborating

I get COVID vaccine apprehension....but this seems kind of stupid for the tried and true vaccinations.

I disagree with this.

Covid vaccine, maybe. Make it optional like the flu vaccine.

But the others that have been around for ages...no. We need to keep those illnesses at bay.

it's a bad idea.  We should work on rebuilding the credibility of scientists so people trust them again, not eliminate something that has made our children and society much safer.

Maybe appointing an anti-vax heroin addict head of DHS wasn’t such a good idea? 🤔

This is a terrible policy reversal and an over-reaction to the COVID vaccine situation. I've lived in Florida for 21 months now and in the next gubernatorial election, finding a Republican candidate in the primary who wants to return vax mandates will be a priority issue.

Why? As a parent, you're still able to consult with your pediatrician and decide what vaccines are appropriate for your children.

I thought he was talking COVID flu shot. Where did he say measles?  And I bet you don't want to have Trump crack down on crime in violent cities. Wanna roll the dice with that? We can compare numbers if you want.

Diseases were a scourge of humanity, wiping us throughout history, until Jenner came along with his smallpox vaccine. Coming up with vaccines was one of the greatest developments in human history, Notice how all of these plagues have ((poof)) went away. Maybe not. Nobody alive today has an active memory of those times, the entire reason we overcame is because the vaccine regiment of full vaccination has been a smashing success.

That kid over there has an allergic reaction to the vaccine. Meanwhile that kid's mom is dumb as a rock. We, the healthy, have a civic obligation to the sick, the elderly, and the children of morons to protect them as well.

This is the key piece here that the dopes like MO and utilt99 and BrahamaBulls miss while they rush to their circle jerk of ignorance.

There are people who legitimately cannot get a vaccine for something because of a potential allergic reaction to the component that delivers the vaccine into the body- or some aspect of the vaccine in general. So someone who is able to get the vaccine but doesn't is now a danger to that former student because their parents (most likely mom) read some BS nonsense online and decided they are a doctor in between selling overpriced Scentsy wax melts to their neighbors.

As a race of people we eradicated polio and smallpox and all that.....why are we inviting it back into society?

Polio hasnt been eradicated. And when something is eradicated like smallpox then you don't need a vaccine.  We haven't required smallpox vaccines since the 1980s.

Someone needs to go back to school.

Shaping up to be a race between Byron Donalds , Casey DeSantis or maybe John Morgan. I’m fine with any of them but like

1-Donalds

2-Morgan

3-DeSantis

Well said. Smallpox has been eradicated. That's the only one. Anything else (with the possible exception of polio) can come back into populations that have not been vaccinated.

Disease eradication and elimination

Quote

Eradication of an infectious disease is declared when the disease is not found or transmitted anywhere in the world. The only human infectious disease to be eradicated through vaccination is smallpox. Polio is on the verge of being eradicated, with cases of the wild (not vaccine derived) strain only found in Central Asia. Rinderpest (a relative of measles that affected cattle) is the only animal disease to be eradicated through vaccination of cattle.

An infectious agent must fit several criteria to be eradicated. First, it must be easily detectable in the population. Smallpox caused a serious rash over the face and body, so people were identified and sent to isolation efficiently. People knew if they were exposed to a case, because they could see the disease when there was no laboratory test available, and those exposed were sent into quarantine. For those infectious diseases that do not have obvious physical manifestations, a highly precise laboratory test (with few false negatives) is needed. However, isolation and quarantine alone are not enough.

Second, the vaccine against the infectious agent must be highly effective and available to everyone at risk of contracting the disease. This guarantees most people getting the vaccine become immune to infection and/or disease, and that herd immunity is activated through vaccination of most of the population. For example, the effectiveness of the measles vaccine is around 99% in populations getting the two-dose series. That effectiveness drops for the whole population if a significant percentage of the population is not given the vaccine, triggering outbreaks.

Third, and closely associated with the second point, the public must accept the vaccine and get vaccinated. The vaccine could be highly effective, have an outstanding track record of safety, and be available at little to no cost to the entire population… But all that is meaningless toward eradication if enough people in the population will not get the vaccine. This is a big problem in the era of vaccine misinformation and disinformation spreading through online sources.

Finally, the infectious agent in question cannot be transmitted efficiently between animal species. For example, influenza is found in humans, birds, pigs, and other animals. In 2009, the H1N1 influenza pandemic happened when a strain jumped from pigs to humans and was able to be transmitted efficiently from person to person. Because of this, influenza is not a candidate for eradication, but it is a candidate for elimination if a universal influenza vaccine is developed.

Florida tripling down on stupid right now.
