The final part was it became obvious we couldn't even discuss things at a base level without assuming poorly of others. Or claiming they meant something other than what they said, effectively calling them liars. When we lose that base level of discussion in good faith, there isn't much left.

And mostly, it just no longer was something that fit in what we're trying to do as a business in fostering good community and discussion.

Not to say there wasn't some good. Obviously, there was. But in the end, the good was way too little compared to the bad.

I'm also not worried at all about there being places to continue political discussion on the internet. There are tons of options there for folks.

I don't know about others, but it really wasn't until this thread (or one similar), where I even knew about them.  I would look over there once in a while to laugh.  You know, kind of like when you see a video and someone says, "Watch this!".  You know disaster is coming, but you hang around to watch, to get a good laugh at the result.  That's how I saw their political forum anyway.

Really though I just find it funny that some people are so caught up in political slap fights on this forum and/or try to make everything political and they ALSO have the time to do the same across multiple forums. That's a lot of time and effort spent on arguing politics with strangers. 

This thread is 6 pages long and without reading through all of it, It would not surprise me at all if the same 5-6 posters comprise most of the "discussion" in here.

I used to think we could use the Political Forum as a harmless place to siphon off political bickering from the Free For All Forum. Over the last few months, we've realized it's not harmless and we're actually contributing to the toxicity and division in hosting the forum.

My guess is most people will blame "the other" side for this. Interestingly, that's a good part of what killed the forum.

And to be clear, we all did this. Myself included. I know a few people liked to fan their conspiracy theory that one segment of people wanted to "get the forum shut down". I can say without hesitation that theory had nothing to do with why it's closing.

We simply proved we were unable to be cool enough to each other to have a forum that aligned with our Footballguys business of creating a positive community.

Please hear this: Keep all political talk out of the Free For All Forum. Posting anything there that anyone feels might be remotely political will result in a suspension. We tolerated the Political Forum for a while. We LOVE the Free For All forum.

And if people try to ruin it by bringing the same type of behavior and content we had here to the FFA, there won't be much patience.

Is this the right thing? Like everything else we do, the answer to that question is "I don't know." But it's what we feel is the right thing.

Again, please do NOT bring up this topic in the Free For All forum. We created a thread HERE for folks to talk about it as they discuss where next to go for this kind of talk, The thread will be open for the next few days.

But please keep it civil.

Best to you and I hope folks can be more cool in other places than we've been here.

There has always been a bit of a "Cheers vs. Gary's Tavern" deal between the two sites.  I presume you've been here long enough to remember the jihads we used to have, before Joe cried to Mike about it and we were asked to stop.

Personally I've barely posted there, mostly when I was on chemo and mostly sat around all day (not enough volume here for that IMO, although some seem to accomplish it).  Or back when this place went down more regularly.  But I find it an interesting, I'm not sure the phrase, "sociological experiment" to see the evolution of different places with different clientele and approaches.   

Also if he whacked the politics forum, does that mean I lose those 50-ish sweet post counts?

I remember the jihads. I probably have a handle or two over there because of them. And yes... I agree... "cheers vs garys tavern" is a good analogy. I've always viewed it more from an FF standpoint and being part of the IBL, it has always felt like the secondary goal, besides winning the league, was making sure to finish above FBG 

So this topic, as titled, does interest me if the actual FBG forums were closing... but this seems to be just about politics. That's the aspect that makes me laugh.

I post on both.  I guess they just felt everyone got too snarky and mean.   They tolerate way way less over there than here when it comes to name calling etc.  Realistically, the board had maybe 20 active posters at best.   The majority were severely liberal.  So I liked going there to see how the other half thinks about things.  It always got into a b!tch session almost everytime.
