cyclone24 1,913 Posted January 12, 2017 So like a year ago I think I posted something like "If you just had 10k to do whatever you wanted what would you do"....didn't get anything that triggered me so I just saved it. Long story short we have an nba D league team here in Des Moines and thru a friend I can get seats, mid court on the floor front row for like $750 a ticket for the season. It's so stupid...I have the money, I'd enjoy it...but I struggle spending it. Anyone else feel like that? Like even though I have the money I still go 'Yeah but do you really need that?' type feeling.

cyclone24 1,913 Posted January 12, 2017 Yeah you don't need that Ha im a basketball guy but yeah...i dont need it but jesus...i feel like i say that with anything.
IGotWorms 4,058 Posted January 12, 2017 Ha im a basketball guy but yeah...i dont need it but jesus...i feel like i say that with anything. Well you don't just spend money to spend it. What's important to you? Spend it on that. For me it'd be traveling/vacation. Or maybe some big events. Not stupid season tickets to the D league but GOOD tickets to an NBA playoff game or something like that. But whatever it is that appeals to you most. My opinion is if you spend money on experiences you are doing it right. If you spend it on stupid sh!t like toys or whatever, I'm not sure that really "gets" you anything in the end. But that's just my own personal philosophy.
mmmmm...beer 807 Posted January 12, 2017 I have way to easy a time spending money. Don't give me no cash... Hey I have $300 in my pocket! What should I buy today!?
penultimatestraw 473 Posted January 12, 2017 Yeah, I'd take a trip somewhere, anywhere other than Iowa. But seriously, I agree with worms. If you really enjoy mediocre basketball, go for it! And yes, I have trouble spending money on "stuff".
BunnysBastatrds 2,441 Posted January 12, 2017 Two years ago I spent six grand on Saints tickets.
TimmySmith 2,782 Posted January 12, 2017 I have trouble pulling the trigger for purchases. I drag stuff out for years, figuring every month I am saving money. My wife spends like crazy. Right now I want a new vehicle since my current one is a bit too big and rather impractical for me. We'll see how long it takes. I honestly cannot remember the last time I spent more than $500 on anything purely for me. Gave up the Skins tix 10 years ago. The only purely selfish purchase is paying for baseball leagues and that is over the course of a year and doesn't add to $500.
vuduchile 1,945 Posted January 12, 2017 For certain things, yes. Especially things for my own personal use and of no benefit to the rest of my family. For example, I've had this Eddie Bauer fleece jacket for 8-9 years. It's seen better days and the zipper has gotten jacked up a few times. Every winter, I look for something to replace it, but I always end up telling myself I don't REALLY need it.
NorthernVike 2,086 Posted January 12, 2017 Nope. Not at all. I work for my money, I spend it on what I want. Spent over $700 on a new ice auger last month and it didn't bother me one bit.
Brad GLuckman 519 Posted January 12, 2017 For small purchases, if I want it I get it. The big one for me is a house. I have a very nice home now, but my wife and I want to upgrade to something better. There is no reason to. We have plenty of space, an extra bedroom, nice neighborhood, in a good school district but I just want something a little better. I'm willing to buy a new home but I just keep thinking that money could be invested for retirement. Do I want to live in a nicer home for 30 years or retire earlier? Can't make up my mind. nzoner 937 Posted January 12, 2017 I feel like that when it comes to certain things that I'd have "something to show for it" but have no problem dropping $500-$1000 at a casino for a weekend of video poker and drinking.Granted, there have been times I've left the casino with more than or about what I brought but those times are not the norm.I always make the comment that I'm a degenerate but I think it really comes down to what's important to you and seeing that I work and make decent money I like to spend on entertainment. Bert 1,128 Posted January 12, 2017 Things like cars, household items, cloths I have a hard time spending money. Always look for the best deal, coupons, sales, whatever. That said, I'll drop a grand in Vegas or playing golf and not think twice.
patweisers44 845 Posted January 12, 2017 I have no issues. I have a good job and been pretty wise saving and investing. I go to Vegas at least 2x a year and my wife and I do at least one other major vacation yearly. We spend quite a bit on things others may see as frivolous but I also donate money (and time) to several charities. In a nutshell, I am covering bases for my future and at the same time enjoying the finer (or at least fun-ner LOL) things in life...and helping others. I met a wise geek in Vegas a couple years back and he said something that really stuck with me. After a particularly ugly loss in a three-card poker hand the dealer apologized and Bert said "That's ok, its just money....I will go back to work on Monday and make more of it." I use a shortened version amongst my friends now "Its just cheese."
iam90sbaby 2,611 Posted January 12, 2017 All the time. I have trouble spending money, even when it is something as simple as lunch. I feel like I am stealing money from my future self.

Bert 1,128 Posted January 12, 2017 October? I may have a trial the 3rd - 13th but other than that I can make October work. Going next week and the AVN just happen to be going on at that time.
Patriotsfatboy1 1,432 Posted January 12, 2017 Sometimes I do. I get money from my mother for Christmas every year. I tell her that I don't need anything, but she wants to give me something, so she usually gives me a gift card every year. They pile up on my desk. I will then go through some streaks where I go on a spending spree. Sometimes it is expensive stuff like vacation or work on the house. Sometimes it is impulse buys on Amazon (got a good air fryer that really works). In general, though, I don't buy stuff unless I think that I need it.

Going next week and the AVN just happen to be going on at that time. the 9th is columbus day so later in the month would be better anyway. Week of 22nd works for me. Jetblue doesn't have October up yet so I can't check the cost. Pat?
RLLD 4,230 Posted January 12, 2017 Yes. When I needed a new car I labored over it for months, meanwhile my current car at that time would break down at least once per month, which meant my wife would have to come get me....then i would fix it and so on....eventually we were out together one day and she drove to the dealer and left me there....told me I would either walk home or drive home....LOL..... But yes, its actually a "thing" with me now, and each week I track how much a spend on any given thing, tracking %'s in specific areas, and often I will avoid buying something even though i really should, and revel in avoiding spending.... I can tell you silly stuff like Tide w/Febreeze is usually about $14 at a supermarket, but $11 at Kmart and $10 or less at a Dollar store, I track this stuff....it brings me joy.... Most businesses are not about serving your needs, but instead about extricating your hard earned money from you for something you don't need....and too often for prices that are extravagantly more than the product is actually worth. patweisers44 845 Posted January 12, 2017 I will be going to vegas in September with my wife and then in October to celebrate a milestone bday. My buddy turns 50 in September and I do in November. We are splitting the difference and going halfway in between. Likely the weekend of the 14th is when I would be out there.

fandandy 3,313 Posted January 12, 2017 750 for D League "season tickets" seems kinda pricey. I've watched on TV and those places always look empty. That said, if if gives you 750 dollars worth of enjoyment then go for it. To each his own. It's not like you're taking food off the table with this purchase. But, as a Geek, why not just buy a team? jerryskids 6,797 Posted January 12, 2017 Neither my wife nor I like to spend money, so I'm lucky in that regard. That being said, 10+ years ago I was making a lot of money and, short of getting a big house, we didn't spend much money on anything but the kids. Then over time we had some investments go south, and I lost that gig, and suddenly we didn't have the money to spend even if we wanted. Now I'm back to making geek money, and my wife has a good job as well, so we are building back up the nest egg. This time around however we have learned that life is too short to not spend any money, so we intend to spend about 25% of our non-retirement positive income on things we want/need to do around the house. Allegedly.
Cruzer 1,995 Posted January 12, 2017 you're much closer than I am! Ha, true. But I'm not much of a gambler, least on that level. I go to Windstar (an hour away) for my gambling itches... But we've not yet got our MGA schedules and need to make sure when our Club Championship is - plus a few other things.
