I can watch safely online whereas I have to think a whole lot of your 'stuff' must be right there on the coast ready to be battered repeatedly. It can't be a good feeling. My big natural disaster was that 8.0 Sichuan earthquake eleven years ago. I got a good shaking for a minute and a half(plus two weeks of constant aftershocks in the thousands) , a good scare, a good story, and a week off work. But all my stuff was still intact and I didn't even lose internet access. Mother Nature is not going to be so kind to you. They seem to be thinking it will be a ways out offshore when it goes by but it could be rough. I moved here in 1999 and did not go through a storm for 15 years. Now this is the third one in four years. Pretty shitty.

Maybe your turn was five years ago and you never know if the next one or the one after that will get you. Then the seasons change and you're feeling good about things for nine months. I've had 47 years of watching them on TV. One year in Detroit we got really heavy winds and rain from the remnants of what had been Hurricane Fran that had found their way that deep inland. We got bad snows in winter in Detroit; in Panzhihua weather is hardly a concern. We never get anything worse than a heavy rainfall and sometimes December and January come and go and winter never shows up.

I see blizzard is on your list. We get really bad winters but no matter how cold, we never worry about out house getting wiped out. My hope is that global warming will gradually improve winters. I haven't been there for winter since 2001 but I understand they've been getting milder although this past winter was rough and broke the trend. Panzhihua is much nicer. Summer isn't too hot whereas winters hardly exist when they show up at all.

I made a mistake coming to Shenzhen. The heat and humidity is focking brutal, and that's coming from a southerner. I sweat through two or three shirts a day for much of the year. Panzhihua did have a minor earthquake in 2008. I'd be shocked if that's what you're talking about. It was only a 6.1 but it was plenty dangerous enough as it killed 41 people. That was August 2008. I wasn't here at the time, I was still living in Chengdu. Four months prior, in May of 2008, Wenchuan, just west of Chengdu (in the same province), got hit with an 8.0 earthquake that killed upwards of 87,000. That was the one I'd dealt with. I remember hearing about how Panzhihua got a 6.1 that shook for eight seconds and I thought "Ha. Amateurs. We had aftershocks that big." California got a 6.4/7.1 in July and I felt the same way. Meh. The 8.0 you're thinking of was in a smaller city just west of Chengdu. At the time, I lived in western Chengdu near third ring road, and the major arterial road to the earthquake was also the big road near my house. The government confiscated all the cranes and bulldozers and whatever else equipment they found useful from private construction companies, put their projects on hold, and shipped them all out down the road new my house.... or at least tried to, they'd also had a massive traffic jam frustrating their efforts. Voltaire 5,316 Posted September 4, 2019 I'm looking forward to hearing from Bill; seeing how his boat, equipment, and shop made out. You have to figure in his line of work he's right on the water. Some chick host that was filling in for some other liberal was ranting on and on about Trump playing golf. Yelling and saying "God-damn him" over and over again. She said that she wished he had some venereal disease that wouldn't go away and "only if Jesus was real" hoping Jesus would make sure of it or something I guess. And then she mentioned how the hurricane affected her vacation because she had to watch the horror of what was happening rather than just enjoying her vacation (not in the hurricane area). But Trump was playing golf! "God-damn him". Not sure what the point was. But holy crap was she mad. She does not like Trump. The Midwest isn't bad. Tornados are frightening, and I have been close to more than a few, but they usually are out in the open for the most part and can be avoided. Devastating if one comes through your neighborhood, but hurricanes, fvck that. Lived in Florida for 3 years in St. Pete, mandatory evacuations twice, and the hurricanes moved and ravaged other parts of the state. Worked as a contractor on a utility in New Orleans when Katrina hit there. Holy fvck. The people there were never the same. Fvcking dumbest locale in the nation to live is N.O. But I do watch NCIS New Orleans even though it's a bad show.
