The 4 worst coaches in NFL history

Recommended Posts

All I can think of is Rich Kotite.  He seemed to always be a running joke, or the measure by which all bad NFL head coaches are held to.  I don't know why.  But name yours.

Mike Martz. This fucktard had no idea how to use Greg Olsen. Shipped him off to Carolina for ham sandwich. He blew it in the Super Bowl and had no idea how to use Calvin Johnson. He brought in az hakim who is garbage but tiny and fast. He thought that was the recipe for winning, not Calvin Johnson.

Simply put, he sucked.

Art Shell. Had the genius idea of not being on the sidelines as a head coach for Christ's sake. He was universally reviled as a head coach.

Even the black players hated him.

Someone remind me why we fired Jim Caldwell again, please. Or don't. Honestly, I never understood that in the first place.

Tony Dungy - Had Peyton Manning for 100 years and has 1 SB ring.

LOL, stole my idea.  Outside of Dungy and Gruden, I think every coach Tampa had deserve consideration.

McKay took a new franchise to the NFC Championship game in their 4th Season. He was a jerk. But that's pretty impressive.

Is the guy who wasted the greatest QB in history considered one of the worst?  If so, I vote Mike McCarthy.

Tom Brady was on the Packers?

How dare you say the same things about Dungy that everyone says about McCarthy? Racist.

That is true.  Honestly, I don't really count him.  Back in the day, it was a lot harder for new franchises to acclimate.  He didn't do that bad really.  He made the playoffs 3 times in his first 8 seasons.

Tom Coughlin did it in his second year with an expansion franchise.

NFL v1976 vs NFL v1995 were 2 entirely different environments.  The NFL gave cap exemptions to the Jags and Panthers so that they could catch up quickly.  Back in '76, the Bucs were just thrown into the water and told to swim.  Seattle entered the league in '76 also.  Took them 8 years to make the playoffs.

This probably won't resonate as he went on to win a SB with the Seahawks, but I always thought that the Pete Carroll era of the NE Patriots was one of the worst coaching jobs I have ever seen.    He was a terrible coach then.   Got steamrolled by Kraft & let Bobby Grier fuk up his picks and free agents.    Had no idea how to handle Drew Bledsoe.   Took over a team that went to the SB and went 10-6, 9-7, and 8-8 and got fired.    His 2nd year the Pats got smoked by the flipping Jaguars in a 1st round wild card game.

He's been pretty good with the Seahawks, maybe he learned a lot of lessons from his Pat's run.    But I think that kind of covers up how bad he was with the Pats.

Not to mention that McKay did it before Free Agency.

The Texans and Browns came after the Jags. They’re both still waiting on a title game appearance.

That's right... because they didn't get the same cap exemption that the Jags and Panthers did.  In Carolina, Dom Capers made the NFC Championship in his 2nd year as well.  The league realized they screwed up, and didn't do that again.

Dave Campo is a good one. Took over a team that made the playoffs the previous 2 years then went 5-11, 5-11 & 5-11.

I'll throw Lou Holtz out there.  Quit the team with one game remaining.

Pete Carroll says he transformed how he coached after reading John Wooden's book: A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court

He read the book in 1999 after being fired by the Patriots.  His takeaway from the book was that Wooden was a failure in the first 16 years of his career, and then Wooden refocused on what was really important to him, and Wooden built everything around that.  So Carroll copied that formula.  In Carroll's case, he felt what was super important was being a competitor.  So from that point on, he surrounded himself with people who were super competitive.  That turned Carroll into a dominant head coach.

When you think about it, that approach would likely work very well for Carroll in particular.  The flaw in surrounding yourself with super competitive people is that the room can explode as everyone wants to win in their own way.  But Carroll is all smiles and love and can smooth the egos out and get them to work together.  So he's the perfect coach for that model.

Interesting and makes sense.    He does seem like a different kind of coach with the Seahawks than he was with the Pats.    That always kind of stuck with me because of how awful I thought he was with the Pats but he seems OK to good with the Seahawks.

May have to go read that Wooden book now. . .

Not that I am a real fan or anything or cared about the Patriots before 2001, but Rod Rust coached the 1990 Patriots to a 1 and 15 season and never coached again. Tough to beat that.

Cam Cameron in 2007 was 1-15 with the Dolphins...  Never coached in the NFL again...

That was you?

It was  a great time. The Patriots kicker got player of the year or something. We laughed.   Steel bleachers on a cold day. The back and forth was hilarious. Got kicked out of the Purple Rose or something like that in Boston on Friday. Good times.
