That sucks man... Sheesh... Sorry about your Dad.  He pal'ed around on here with pretty much all of us for the last 20 years.  Sorry to see him go out like that.

Are you really?  How does this work? You don't know any of them. How are you sending them? Who are you sending them to? Do you send them with a read receipt so you know they were received?

Gary seemed like a genuinely good dude. I remember posting with him about rigging small animal traps in the backyard.

My best wishes to his son and extended family.

We have had many flame wars around these parts, say horrific things to each other, on a daily basis. Dark humor, if you will. But there is usually some semblance of a code.

gocolts was a made man. While my memory is not quite eidetic, but it's close, I can't recall when someone acted like an assh0le to gocolts. And he wasn't doing that to anybody else. He was....too nice. That is something that just doesn't happen around here. Somebody that is just too nice. I had nothing but positive interaction with him, which is nearly impossible.

I'm very sorry for your loss. It's a huge loss for this site as well. Clearly, he is highly regarded.

Damn. Gary was uber active on this bored for a long time, sharing a lot of his adventures- or misadventures, whatever the case was. He always shared how proud he was of his son.

When gocolts fatherr died things seemed to change fast. He had to take care of his father’s estate and the home he inherited. Didn’t he also find a new woman around that time?

He finally just said he didn’t have time for us anymore and basically disappeared.

Thought about him recently when seeing posts from Indy Colts Fan- reminded me of the gocolts moniker.

Stand strong haloman. You dad was a regular here and was generally well liked. He bragged about you often.

As for your inheritance- don’t get fooled. A quarter million is life changing- but it can disappear in a heart beat. Learn a trade, work, and just invest that inheritance.

Yeah - the woman didn't help matters any. She's had her own share of mental health issues and it was around that time frame that dad started to seem to lose himself.

We're currently working on my place right now and we found over 400 used boxes of K2 - and he hasn't lived here since either 2017 or 2018. So this has been an ongoing problem for a while.

As for the money - yeah, I've seen firsthand how fast that money can go. The way I'll be investing it will allow me to pull some out every month to keep myself living comfortably while the money continues to build. I have a job but it doesn't pay enough to make ends meet. I'll also be able to use a chunk of it to pay off the rest of the mortgage here, which will shave off 300-500 a month in bills and make things a lot easier.

Hindsight is 20/20, but we should have reached out somehow.

IIRC, Gary ran into into some money and he had some woman, then he posted about funding some sort of neighborhood MMA league.  Then he disappears.......

I do remember thinking, ugh this might not end well, but never acted on it or mentioned it.  ☹️

ETA:  Also what @Old School said.

This is absolutely true. He used to say he lived for the times when he was with his son. And he was hugely well liked. We agreed on nothing politically but he was always a gentleman and he will be missed.

I was going to say this.  Now I can't even say it because it has already been said.  :(

Gary was the definition of "good people."  The kind of guy who if he only had $10 to his name, and you needed money, he'd borrow 5 more and give you 15.  The kind of guy who would jump in front of you to take a bullet (insert requisite wheelchair joke after an appropriate mourning period).

And @haloman30, everyone has mentioned how much your dad loved you; I think a lot of us heard so much about you and that love that we were just a little bit emotionally invested in your success.  We are glad to see you grew into a well-adjusted young man.

Thanks guys - it brings me some comfort being reassured that I'm doing some things right in all this.

A couple of dad's friends ended up setting up a GoFundMe on my behalf, since like 5 people mentioned it before, here's the link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/funeral-expense-and-his-beloved-son

I’ll donate this weekend

Your dad was into some really extreme horror movies. Back in 2013-2014 I sent him a few DVDs that probably got him on some kind of FBI watchlist.

If you find them … sorry.

I don’t want to get on a soapbox but as someone who chairs different charities I say don’t use the gofundme link. Give directly to his PayPal account. GFM fees cripple your donations. Give directly to Gary’s son - not through GFM

So, just this quickly people are sending money directly to this “kid.”   I realize we have confirmation of sorts that GoColts is gone.  Rest in peace. What we don’t have is confirmation who is posting about it.

One of my thoughts when I read the OP was “I wonder how long it takes before this becomes about money.”  Didn’t take long.  How do y’all know who you’re giving money to?

The rest is going into a quite safe investment account - not an IRA, but a more standard investment account. I've got some friends that do a lot of stock trading and know what they're doing - and they'll help me get things set up in such a way that I'll have more than enough money coming in each month. And in 5-10 years I'll essentially be rich.

It's just sad that dad won't be here to see everything finally get straightened out.

I do have a job at the moment, though at present it's not enough for my bills alone. I've been reliant on my dad to help cover the remaining costs - which of course he can't do anymore.

It'll be going into an account and set up in such a way where I'll likely be able to pullin well in excess of what I need per month, while it still continues to build over time.So it'll be just fine in the end.

1 million dollars will generate $40,000 a year in sustainable income.  That’s 4%.  Don’t take any more per year or you will not have the success you think.

If you net $100,000 that’s $4,000 per year.

I didn’t say it was Gary.  But we don’t know who it is.  Would someone’s kids really be motivated to come to a website where their dad hasn’t even been active for a couple years?  And only 2 days after finding his dad dead.

Maybe I’m too skeptical.

The money is gonna be put into an investment where it can continue to build relatively quickly. Historical data shows it doubling every 5-10 years, give or take a few years. I'm gonna be pulling out below that threshold where it's enough to keep me going on top of bills, while it still continues to grow year after year.

I understand the skepticism. Early on, my goal was to try and notify as many people as possible - and I remembered him talking about this forum. I made my account back in 2017 though I never posted.

If I had any idea where that FFToday shirt is, I'd take a photo with it as proof - but I've got no clue where to begin. If you know of anything I'd be able to do that'd help you relax then by all means let me know. I'm the only child and nothing has really been sold yet, unless he's been doing so himself.

Yeah - that's why I didn't even want to bother with the GoFundMe. People here kept asking, family kept asking, so I let dad's friend Tim (who knew dad for 45 years or so) and his wife set it up.

The real trouble is that dad left all but 9$ in his bank account, and every bill except the electricity is behind. There's probably ~2000 due on bills to catch those up, as well as 5000 in credit card debt. We also need to pull together 4000 in order for him to even be buried. With the state of neglect that both houses are in, it's going to take a bit to get stuff relocated and sold - so selling the property won't be any kind of quick process.

It's because of these reasons that I went ahead with the GoFundMe - because while long-term things will be alright, it's incredibly dire in the short-term. As I said before, though - I don't know if dad ever posted photos of anything with some kind of specific item, or at any specific spot in the houses or wherever or something like that - I'm happy to get a photo of myself in the same spot or with the same item if that helps anything.

It's a difficult process with so much going on - and I do feel dirty asking for money - and in this kind of thing, I 100% get the skepticism.

Yeah, we ended up buying an Ultimaker 3. I've still got it in the other room. It's in good shape although a bit yellowed from sunlight.

The fight club was something he was helping with for a bit. It ended up not going anywhere, though I forget why.

Tragically, most of the vehicles that grandpa left behind got wrecked. The Camry went first - dad slammed it into the gas tank of a semi truck after someone threw a stink bomb in the car. The Jeep is something grandpa worked on a ton - that one needs some work but may be fixable. There was some kind of other blue car grandpa had that ended up being sold early on. And the last vehicle was a van that was bought by my great grandma - which was the last working vehicle, and the one dad wrecked last before he passed.

During all that, he also ended up buying two mustangs and an SUV. One mustang is alright - it doesn't drive but needs some work before it can. The other mustang (the first one he bought) got totaled and flipped upside down from him using K2 before switching to compressed air, and the SUV also got wrecked a few times from the compressed air use until it got totaled.

You can see him link my gaming community in a post further down. It's the same domain as my paypal email, if that helps prove anything.
