Serious answer- I like to just donate money (and time when I can) to local food pantries and shelters. Figure that one will most benefit the community I live in. Outside of that I like the Matthew 25: Ministries which is a humanitarian aid for both here and abroad. Also, stuff for veterans.

Ive found that donating time > donating money.  I volunteered for a boys running program for several years to help boys become better men and humans.

Now I spend most of my time and money volunteering for a local food pantry that feeds people.  We've done a lot of great work.  Delivering a hot meal to someone in need is good.

Also give a ton of crap to the Vietnam vets each year

Got to listen to a talk from their CTO a few months ago at a conference.  I hadn't heard of them but after hearing him talk I was impressed by their mission.  I'd have to do research to see if they efficiently use donations before donating to them but on the surface seems like a great charity.  My choices for this thread are Food Bank of the Rockies and the Jimmy V foundation.

I neglected to mention the local food pantry, for which my leadership group created an annual community event that continues to this day and draws around 1,000 people. 

Obviously, I donate a lot of time to cats. In the past month, working with the DFW-area rescue, we spared three old-timers from euthanasia. One of them spent most of his life in a cage as a breeder cat. His spirit is broken, but he sure enjoyed hanging out on the couch with us last night and receiving affection he's never known.
