How Country Are You and Your Family?

Recommended Posts

In Southern States, we always thought of the yankees as city dwellers and factory workers. This was certainly in error. When I moved to Maryland, I had views of cornfields and a Holstein dairy out my back door, and thoroughbred race horses from the front porch. Some of my neighbors each took part in archery, black powder, and rifle deer season. I went to a stock show and rodeo in Harrisburg, PA.. I saw little boys who could work all the levers on the big tractors.

On my mother's side, they came from Virginia before Virginia split. They were from what is West Virginia now. Came to Texas in a wagon train in 1856. I have an old hurricane lamp that made the trip. They grew wheat and had cattle here. Their cabin in Texas was no joke, two stories with four iron rods that held the walls straight. On the outside there were big "S" looking iron do-dads connected to the rod's, tracking the walls. There were slits in the walls to shoot the indigenous from. Also the walls were three courses thick on brick made from the property, and fired with mesquite wood, also from the property.

In modern times I have a cousin that rode rodeo broncos and did calf roping. He was a sponsor at The Fort Worth Rodeo for years and makes very expensive saddles by hand today. My uncle Ross was a dairy man. He had antique firearms laying all over his house. We are talking Winchester Model 1873's and the like. He loved some old Remington pump .22's too. His bull cost $20K around 1966. It got out its electric fence and stalked me like in a cartoon when I was dove hunting with a single shot .410. I barely made it to the fence ahead of him. If my uncle had not just put in new post made of rail road ties, and strung the wire tight, I would have died right there. I was able to dive between the wires. The bull was so pissed, he attacked a post, and knocked the dust off a bunch of other post in both directions. Did't tell the folks for years, because I figured they wouldn't let me hunt there any more. My uncle Lee grew peanuts and lots of other stuff. He was a diviner and I have his rods. Anybody can do it. I found water pipes when I was on a crew at TCU with two bent wire hangers.

My dad's side came from Tennessee. his ancestor, Edward Burleson, was first buried on land donated by his family. It became the Texas State Cemetery. My dad's great grandfather was in a Tennessee Artillery Unit in he Civil War. He was captured at Shiloh and spent two years in a horrendous Union prison. The guards would pick off guys at night when they went to the privy. He survived. The tombstone of those who did not, come to points at the top, so a Yankee can't rest his ass.

About all I can say for myself is I can camp, shoot, and fish. I played country classics with a band. Humble pie time: I had a real Diamondback Rattlesnake head on my Charlie Tweedle hat at a gig. Some drunk girl fell over backwards, and I caught her. In the process, my hat fell off, and I made a grab for it. I got my left palm punctured by a fang. A black bump that looked like a nipple appeared and veins leading away from it went black as well. I thought for a second I was going to the emergency room. My friends would have made sure I was in the newspapers for being the world's biggest idiot "Guitar Player Bit By Hat" or some . Instead I drank a long neck, the swelling went down a tad, and was able to get back up and finish the gig.

You fellers got any country in ya, or are you just a bunch of carpet baggers? Show up and represent.

I've lived in the country most of my life but didn't grow up on a farm or anything.  Grew up hunting, fishing and camping a lot.  I'm more country than the average person but no where close to some of the locals and my in-laws.

I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
I'm a little bit of Memphis and Nashville
With a little bit of Motown in my soul
I don't know if it's good or bad
But I know I love it so
I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll

He's a little bit gentle, he's a little bit runnin' wild
She's a little bit of fullgrown-woman, she's a little bit of child
Don't know if I'm happy or sad
My music makes me whole
I'm a little bit country
And I'm a little bit rock 'n roll

I like that peaceful easy feeling of a laid back country song
And when I sing my rock n' roll, I can sing it all night long
I love my country with all my heart and soul
I go out on Saturday night for a little bit of rock 'n roll
I know I'm goin' to feel allright
No matter where I go
With little bit of country
And a little bit of rock 'n roll

I like that peaceful easy feeling of a laid back country song
And when I sing my rock n' roll, I can sing it all night long
I love my country with all my heart and soul
I go out on Saturday night for a little bit of rock 'n roll
I know I'm goin' to feel allright
No matter where I go
With little bit of country
And a little bit of rock 'n roll

We're a little bit country
We're a little bit rock 'n roll

I definitely have country roots.  Both my parents are from Podunk NE Kansas.  My paternal grandfather was a farmer.

I was born in Houston before my dad's job relocated us to Upstate NY when I was 4.

Moms and Pops came from coal country PA.  They got the phuk outa there as soon as they could.

I thank them daily for their decision to pursue education and culture instead of huntin and fishin.

😐  I guess all the storytellers are at the Sanctuary, or at least that is what they used to say.

From what I understand Rusty and Gutterboy are a big reason it’s a ghost town there now. I’m told.

In highschool I skinned a few rattle snakes I killed, one I even pinned up and sold to some tourists driving through town on their way to Yellowstone.

I can gut, skin, and/or butcher almost any game animal. I used to be able to saddle a horse, although I would probably want someone to help me for safety reasons if i ever tried again.

Although now I live in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country. My country days are behind me :(

In a good way; I don't think the country roots will leave you in this lifetime.

80s college brought me to the city from the country.  That was a good time to be a kid.  Now, being old, I'd rather be back in the country.  Cr-V and Subaru drivers, alone, are enough to want out.

At least if you get murdered, Patrick Swayze will come to investigate.

I am not criticizing, just would like to hear what sets those vehicles apart. Guessing it is the people who drive them. How far behind would Prius owners be?

Where I live I am country by default.   But I don't consider myself that country.  I haven't went hunting since I was 18 or 19.  I don't fish as much as I used to.  I haven't in a while but I could gut and clean a fish.  To me the question is vague.   Not sure how to define "country". To city dwellers being "country" could be something as small as knowing how to start a lawn mower.

Nothing like being proud of your parents for raising you up to be a brainless, useless,  liberal scavenger in life. :dunno:

You moron cultist should be recruiting me to your side since I'm exactly the only kind of person you morons like, white and male.

But of course your cult is based on the hate for education, love of a sky fairy, and unfettered fealty to an orange moron.

No thanks boyo.!
