I'm Pretty Much Done Drinking...

Recommended Posts

No... there was no "incident" or ultimatum.  It's been a gradual decline to almost zilch now.

Just don't find it joyable anymore.  Bang for the buck just isn't there.

Even if I don't get buzzed I sleep like sh!t.  If I do get buzzed I sleep worse.  Oh and then feel out of sorts for a few days.

Meh... it just doesn't enhance my good time at all, rather quite the opposite.

PS... I do reserve the right to try an edible or two once I'm not a fed anymore.  Never have partaken, but curious if it would chill me out a bit... a few more months for that.

you have my number

also bro, do this

https://www.youtheory.com/blogs/recipes/sleepy-girl-mocktail

may sound cheesy, I am the biggest skeptic there is about everything

I drink one of these every night before bed, I went from a crappy 3-4 hours wake up a few times to 6-8 hours every night

ALSO DO NOT TAKE EDIBLES TO SLEEP

thc enhanced sleep prevents REM sleep which is also why you always wake up groggy

ironically, I sell THC gummies as a sleep aid, they do put you to sleep

Well, you say you’ve never smoked weed. Weed smokers build up a tolerance. Some guys can smoke it all day long. Some, like me… a little will do. So, if you go into a dispensary, but up front about your inexperience, and be prepared to cut your gummies in half.

Ease into it. Find what works for you.

  • Thanks 1

I have a couple of drinks a night and sleep like a rock, like up to 10 hours a night.

More a observation?  Wasn't planned or any a forethought to it.  Over a few years... all of the sudden I don't drink much at all.

I have curtailed my drinking at home to near zilch because of edibles.

Regarding sleep:  I wear an Oura ring at night to measure heart, temperature, oxygen, some other stuff.  It is quite interesting, as a techie, to see the impact of alcohol on sleep.  There is a clear correlation between higher alcohol consumption and:  higher heart rate, lower heart rate variability (HRV is good, so this is bad), higher temperature, higher respiration rate.  All of this is bad -- your body spends its time processing the jet fuel you've consumed, and not doing its true "sleep" work of healing your brain and body.

It's also interesting that, if I have two or three drinks max, the processing seems to take 8 hours.  If my last drink is at 8PM, at 4AM you can see all of the above parameters start to improve.  There comes a point of consumption, however, where the process takes the entire evening.  I don't usually hit those points any more.

It has definitely helped to convince me to consume less.  I probably should stop altogether, but my cat just died, my wife is out of town, and Friday I leave for Scotland with my son to watch The Open and drink scotch.  So... maybe later.

Oh, and seeing @MTSkiBum's post reminded me:  the best way I've found to sleep better, other than drinking (or eating late btw), is to sleep cooler.  I highly recommend something like the ChiliPad system:  https://sleep.me/  I've got the basic cube which I like.  How's it going for you, Ski?

I know right?!  As I said I'm about to go to Scotland -- I'm sure the hotel will have some big thick comforter and no amount of external cooling will be enough.  :(

I observe the same sleep effects with alcohol on my Fitbit.  Sleep scores much better on alcohol free nights.

I don’t have an Oura ring, but an Apple watch and came to the same conclusions as you did, after seeing my sleep data. I still enjoy single glass of wine or 1 cocktail, but nothing past 6:00pm anymore.

It’s sucks to be old.

Good for you, beer!!!!

I quit from Feb 2018 to August of 2022. went down and has continued to go down hill since then and it's been tough to quit but I keep thinking I need to...mainly for the reasons you mention. it's just not "fun" anymore and makes me feel like cr@p at this point in life. Doesn't add anything.

I too find that edibles are the way to go, but more of a micro-dosing thing; too much and I get paranoid and it feels awful.

I enjoy having 3-4 lite beers to catch a little buzz once in awhile..then that is it.  Had a bad experience with edibles and will never take them again.

Was on a bourbon kick but gave that up a couple years ago. Felt like crap the next day every time I drank bourbon.
