John Quincy Adams became the leading anti-slavery champion in the House of Representatives for many decades after his presidency and William Taft sent on o become a Supreme Court Judge.

I wasn’t aware of those two’s post presidency. There’s probably some others who have done impressive stuff but yeah in modern day Carter is the bench mark. Building houses for poor people, helping assist people around the globe rather than simply cashing checks for speaking fees and getting filthy rich (nothing wrong with that either, just less admirable).

Carter ultimately won, receiving 297 electoral votes and 50.1% of the popular vote to Ford's 240 electoral votes and 48.0% of the popular vote.[126] Carter's victory was attributed in part[127] to his overwhelming support among black voters in states decided by close margins, such as Louisiana, Texas, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Mississippi, Wisconsin, and Ohio.[128] In Ohio and Wisconsin, where the margin between Carter and Ford was under two points, the black vote was crucial for Carter; if he had not won both states, Ford would have won the election.

I met Jimmy Carter at Texas A&M. It was 1986, and he and Gerald Ford were doing a nationwide debate/speaking tour. I got assigned to cover a pre-event news conference with Carter. I sat on the front row, shook his hand and asked a question or two. I have that clipping of my story in a box somewhere. Seemed like a super-nice guy, and he was funny, taking a swipe at Reagan by saying he was confident we would defeat Grenada. I still have a six pack of unopened Billy Beer that I'd added to my beer-can collection in the 1970s. He brought a lot of class and dignity to the presidency during and afterward. Glad he made it to 100!

Voters also were tired of the whole Nixon debacle, and Ford pardoning Nixon didn't earn him many votes. People were angry about that one.

The Saturday Night Live portrayal of him as being clumsy didn't help, either.

It is funny how Biden started the phrase "we hold these truths to be self-evident..", but then did not finish.  Here is the phrase from our Declaration:

I thought he was a great and kind president. I wish more people were like him. He got the hostages out and sadly; Reagan got the credit for his hard work.

Jimmy Carters attempt to go into Iran and free our hostages was one of the worst military operations in our history until Joe Biden came along in Afghanistan and topped it. Big time.
