You Can Live in 4 States; 1 Each Season - Where? Why?

Recommended Posts

Alrighty, let's lighten things up:

You end up with a job where you can live anywhere you want. You decide to rotate between 4 states - one for each season. What four states (cities if you want) and when - and why?

Spring, Houston

Summer, Chicago

Fall Chicago

Winter Houston

I don't like cold at all, but a little change would be alright

Spring - California

Summer - Alaska

Fall - Vermont

Winter - Hawaii

Maybe Colorado in fall instead so it's all on west coast.

Why? I like being outdoors. I don't like scorching heat but I'm losing my taste for the cold as well. Each of these places should generally be a comfortable temperature at that time and offer outdoor experiences.

ETA: perhaps Montana in the fall, I don't really like Colorado (too dry and too high - elevation, that is)

I've always wanted to spend some time in the Upper Hudson Valley.

No desire whatsoever for the boroughs - or anywhere fifty miles from there, but the UHV seems like a vastly underrated gem.

LOL @ Houston. One of the worst cities in Texas, let alone the entire US.

Different strokes I guess. I think Houston is seriously underrated, but it depends on what your vibe is.

Austin is clearly number one, but it's like Portland or Boulder - everybody flocks to the place and now it's Hipsterfied and overpriced.

H-town has such easy access to Austin, Galveston, Matagorda Bay, NOLA - plus a chiitload of various cultures - and Texas music - it makes for a pretty good base of operations.

Been to Dallas. I'd rather chew my own diick off. I've always said Dallas is like New York - without any reason for the attitude. If a city can be a personification of Nuveau Riche/White Trash Televangelism, that's Dallas.

San Antone is just a chiithole. Nice for a visit, but Might as well give that up to the Messicans in exchange for San Diego.

Honestly, I think most Houstonians want people to have an attitude like yours.

If you think 2 1/2 hours driving through the sticks is easy access to Austin, I'm not sure what to tell you.

Not sure I would do 4 states. Probably 2.

Spring and summer in jersey due to family and proximity to NYC, philly etc.

Fall and winter in Arizona because i hate the cold but prefer dry heat to Florida humidity.

Twist my arm for 4 and I'd probably do

Spring in North Carolina specifically the outer Banks. If it wasn't for hurricane threat I would do NC in the fall.

Fall in...... I don't know. Maybe Maine.

Okay Fine.

Something about NYC in the Winter. Christmas, NYE, etc.

Summer? I want heat, bikinis and water. Gimme SoCal.

Spring? Golf, Gardens and Grits. Charleston SC it is.

Fall? Can I just marinate in good wine and food during the harvest season in Napa Valley?

Living in a Houston suburb is like living in a forest plus we have great suburb life in general. I have lived in more states than 90% of the geeks, and Houston is pretty nice.

Don't get me wrong I would move away from Houston in a heartbeat if work allowed it, but Houston is a great place to live and is not even close to the worst city in the US.

My wife grew up in Kingwood. I'm very familiar with the Houston suburbs, and all the awesome Hometown Buffet and Chevys it has to offer. It's a great place to raise a family and slowly die.

ETA: I will admit it's fun to hunt feral hogs though. Good times.

See? This is one of those times (especially on this bored) when it would be so easy to :argue: .. but one of those things that I've learned travelling over many years and living in various places is - It's all about your own individual experience.

You can take a left outside of your hotel and deem the place you're at a complete shiithole, take a right? And it's a great place to settle down.

I had people who absolutely hated Houston (For example) before I went there. But, what I've found - and you're a great example; If you're eating at chain buffets and corporate mexican places in Houston, - that's more on you and your personality and change/risk averse cowardice than upon the city.

I swear, my brother is the same way. He's 8 years older than me and won't go more than 3 blocks from wherever he lives or travels.

Houston has an amazing, diverse and dynamic and well-recognized cosmopolitan dining scene. Again, If your vision of Houston is Hometown Buffet? Well, that's a reckection on you, not the city.

What, praytell ARE the places you'd like?

Winter - as far south as you can get in Florida, then a little west.

Spring - Nevada (Vegas, specifically)

Summer - Northern Michigan

Fall - Northern Michigan

Massachusetts for all 4 seasons. We get it all here. Fock off and stop being pansy asses about the cold. Focking crybabies

Winter - Utah. Best, most consistent snow.

Spring - Any warm college town. Chapel Hill NC and Athens GA are two I've enjoyed. Coeds in sundresses.

Summer - Colorado. Most variety of climbing without blistering heat.

Fall - Hawaii is great, but I also like to see the leaves change. So maybe NC/Virginia?

Unbelievable that Houston, TX would appear on anyone's list.

It isn't the cold I dislike, it's the cold without good outdoor activities. If there aren't big mountains, snow and ice are just a PITA.

The cold, like you, can go fock itself.

The older I get, the more I simply hate the cold. I live in Southern Indiana, we can get all four seasons in the span of a week..

Spring - Don't care, wherever I can hit golf balls. Spring is pretty damn sweet everywhere.

Summer - Illinois (Chicago)

Fall - Southern Indiana (Love my town in the fall)

Winter - Florida (South, very South, basically Cuba)

New Hampster mountains are but a 2 hour drive for me

yes, snow and ice do suck. but out of the 8700 hours of the year, what, maybe 20 of those, you have to deal with clearing ice and snow?

Spring and Fall - Houston. Two major airports, roughly the same distance from either coast, all three major sports, extremely diverse population, good restaurant scene, the people are friendly.

Summer - Denver. Even though Californian's have focked up large portions of this great City/State it is still pretty cool. Mountains are beautiful; the people (the ones born there) are cool and friendly, all three major sports.

Winter Naples. Great golf, restaurants and fishing. I really like that town.

If anywhere was chosen in Texas I figured it would be Austin. That's one fun ass city. May not be sports teams but the restaurant scene there as well as the things to do is unreal. If I was going to stay in Texas that's where I would stay.

I would agree except he said still working. The options flying out of Austin are limited and usually involve a connection.

Also Austin is paying for the decades old "if you don't build it they won't come" mentality around infrastructure. For being so small it is amazing that the traffic is worse than Houston and Dallas.

The cost of living in Austin is also getting out of control.

Do you like to ski or is it all the women in ski pants?

I love connecting through Denver during ski season.

I'm not sure where some of you got the idea Minnesota is not too hot in the summertime. It gets very hot and the humidity is killer. That Vikings player died of heat stroke a while ago
