Hurricane Hilary - West Coast representin'

Recommended Posts

I know this doesn't get much pub because it doesn't affect you least coasters, but we've got a Cat 4 hurricane coming up the Baja peninsula taking aim at the southwest.  OK, it won't be a Cat 4 when it hits SoCal, but it's scary dambit$#@!

Quote

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Hurricane Hilary grew rapidly to Category 4 strength off Mexico’s Pacific coast on Friday and could reach Southern California as the first tropical storm there in 84 years, causing “significant and rare impacts” including extensive flooding.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center said a tropical storm watch has been issued for Southern California, the first time it has ever done that.

Hilary had sustained winds near 145 mph (230 kph) early Friday, and was expected to strengthen a bit more before starting to weaken. It nevertheless was expected to still be a hurricane when approaching Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Saturday night, and a tropical storm when approaching Southern California on Sunday.

No tropical storm has made landfall in Southern California since Sept. 25, 1939, according to the National Weather Service.

Early Friday, Hilary was centered about 360 miles (575 kilometers) south-southwest of Los Cabos on the southern tip of the Baja peninsula. It was moving northwest at 10 mph (17 kph), and was expected to turn further toward the north.

The Mexican government extended its hurricane watches and warnings northward for parts of Baja California peninsula, and also issued a tropical storm watch for parts of mainland Mexico.

“Heavy rainfall in association with Hilary is expected to impact the Southwestern United States through next Wednesday, peaking on Sunday and Monday,” the hurricane center said. It said there was a substantial danger of flash flooding in an area stretching from San Diego to Las Vegas.

“Rainfall amounts of 3 to 6 inches, with isolated amounts of 10 inches, are expected across portions of southern California and southern Nevada, which would lead to significant and rare impacts. Elsewhere across portions of the Western United States, rainfall totals of 1 to 3 inches are expected.”

SpaceX delayed the launch of a satellite-carrying rocket from a base on California's central coast until at least Monday. The company said conditions in the Pacific could make it difficult for a ship to recover the rocket booster.

The Mexican government said a weakened Hilary might skim a sparsely populated area on the western edge of the Baja peninsula early Sunday, and then perhaps hit a more heavily populated area of the coast Sunday night between the cities of Playas de Rosarito and Ensenada, in Baja California state.

Meanwhile, the city of Yuma was preparing Thursday by providing residents with a self-serve sandbag filling station.

The sandbag station will be stocked with sand and empty bags for self-filling while supplies last. Residents were allowed five sandbags per vehicle.

Here in Phoenix we're hoping for a good dousing; we have gotten virtually 0 rain this monsoon season.

Maybe it will be the end of @JustinCharge's world like he's been predicting for so long?!  :o

We are supposed to get remnants of it Sunday/Monday, cooler temps and rain. Interesting since we are so far from So Cal.

Not sure I ever remember being under a hurricane watch in all the time I’ve lived here. Since they’re predicting that we’ll only see up to 4" of rain, I’m guessing it might sprinkle for an hour or two.

Most such storms spur heavy rains, winds, and tornados.  This one is predicted to have the mosdt devastating impact, however, as it is predicted to spawn cankle outbreaks.

If we get significant rain in LA, it might as well be Armageddon.  This place turns into a clusterfūck anytime we experience more than a light shower.

Although you're always needing the rain, getting a full year's worth all at once isn't exactly a great solution as it it potentially causes massive damage. There's a potential silver lining if Mother Nature can get just 0.01% of the water to be harnessed properly, many of those depleted lakes and ponds could use a re-fill.

Best wishes for low property damage and high water levels in lakes next week .

Yeah, I think mudslides in SoCal is a big risk with this.  We don't have any flood planes in Phoenix but washes (vs. drains) collect runoff and inevitably cars get swept away that try to drive through it.

Haven't gotten any rain in central Phoenix yet.  Maybe on the west end of the metro area.  :(

Says the guy who calls people "racists, bigots, homophobe.." simply when someone doesn't agree with him.  Clean up your own f'n house before you point fingers.

Up in Nor Cal we are seeing wind, and a decent humid rain.

News is showing a lot of flooding in So Cal, though, esp the desert mountain areas.

The earthquake happening was interesting, Mama Nature is also trying to drown CA.

I think Mama Nature got sick of the constant whining about a drought for the last umpteen years.  She finally had enough and said "you want water...here's your mf'n water!!"

Weather has been going on since I was born. Hurricanes, tornados, snow storms, heat waves, freezing cold, lightning storms, hail, etc...

It's called Earth.

Weird, right? It's almost as if it's cyclical or something.

Now, if the people in charge could only figure out a way to capture some of this water, instead of letting it run off into the Pacific, we might not have such dire circumstances during the dry part of the cycle.

Alas, there is no money to be made in water storage. :(
