My grill just exploded

Recommended Posts

Older Weber gas grill, probably 15 years old.

Igniter wasnt working so I went inside to get the lighter.

Stuck it in the hole and click - BOOM! Forgot to turn ALL the burners off when I went inside to get the lighter, so the back 2 burners were just oozing propane the whole time.

Literally blew the doors off the cabinet and a hole through the bottom of the cabinet.

Singed the hair on my arm. Its all brittle and crumbly now.

Time for a new grill and maybe some memory improvement exercises.

Glad the kids were inside. What am I supposed to make for dinner now? Shishkabobs in the oven?

I did something similar a couple weeks ago. It wasn't to that extreme and I knew I had one burner on low but flames still shot out and singed a bunch of hair on my arm. I found it pretty hilarious at the time.

I just hate that I forgot about those other 2 burners. Stupid of me. I know better.

Anyway, this gives me an excuse to get something I really want now.

The fact that its propane saved your upper body. The vapor density is greater than ambient air and stays low to the ground.

I'm in the higher end grill market too. What are you considering?

I am also shopping for a new grill, but I prefer charcoal. Ideally a stainless steel drum with a side drum for smoking.

Im willing to consider anything that doesnt spontaneously combust.

I recently bought an LP smoker, so I dont need a multi-purpose grill. But I do like the idea of them.

Will probably get another Weber. This one has held up pretty well.

So your grill exploded and the first thing you did was run here to post? What's up with that?

Glad you're ok, though.

Who wouldn't do that

Anyone have a dream setup where their grill is built-in, with countertops and such?

We are planning on re-doing our back deck/patio in a few years and I already told the wife we are going to do the built in grill and smoker.

Interested to find out what you all may have done?

Don't tell anyone from California or by law every new grill will be outfitted with a propane sensor, audible alarm, and a blast shield.

Some thoughts I have on what I want should I ever decide to build a stationary set up

Have the smoker and the grill set up side by side

Have the top fire box for the smoker also be the grill

Have an area for Cast Iron storage

Have a formica or a bamboo cutting board built in

Have an area for wood storage next to smoker

Have it covered by a remote controlled retractable awning

Must have a sink

Must have a fridge

Please. What kinda loser would do that?

The first thing I did was take a selfie with the sploded grill and post in on FB and Instagram.

Damn, glad it wasn't worse. My parents' neighbor's grill exploded and caught their house on fire. Wife was killed in the fire, husband lasted a couple of days in the hospital before he died.

PSA: Check your supply line periodically and replace it if it's cracked or looks worn out.

Granted, we are in Mpls, so actually sitting out there is usually only mid-April to early October. It's not like we are in the south, and we would be out there 10 out of the 12 months. But during those months we can sit out there, we are basically grilling every single night. Our backyard faces due East, so it is nice and shaded in the evening.

There are some pre-fab setups you can buy (way too expensive), but there also are plans out there to build your own with metal studs. That is probably the route I will take. That way, we can build it to exact fit of our patio and can finish the facing with whatever rock we want and put on our own counter tops.

That would kinda suck.

Yep. Suffered 3rd degree burns, and was off air for a significant time.
