Djgb13 2,339 Posted June 16, 2015 What do you think is the best era of music and why? 70s? 80s? 1800s? Me personally I like the 80s. It's when I was growing up so when I listen it brings back fun memories. But I do love other eras of music as well.

KSB2424 3,148 Posted June 16, 2015 Most people will say the era they were 14-24 years of age. OR the late 60's / early 70's.

Cruzer 1,995 Posted June 16, 2015 I loved 80's music - but only bcoz I was a teenager. I'm certain had I not grown up with it I would of found it cheesy. I have always loved music from the 50's.

Don't get me wrong I like the music now. But with the invention of autotune many people who can sing mediocre now sound amazing. Soon it'll just be people with attractive looks that sing and can't even carry a tune. In the past you have guys like Sinatra who could go up there with no music and sing. Maybe throw in a bit of a band and they are amazing.

ZeroTolerance 584 Posted June 16, 2015 While I really like the early 90s alternative scene, I would never attempt to call it the best period of music. I would go for the already mentioned mid-60s to mid-70s.

Magnificent Bastard 191 Posted June 16, 2015 It's funny, I hated disco during its heyday. Now I like some of it. If you hated Disco, you should thank The Knack and "My Sharona" for knocking it off the top spot. That song brought Top 40 rock back.

MDC 7,173 Posted June 16, 2015 Best? No idea. But my favorites are: 77-84/5 or so, right when punk started bleeding into new wave: Wire, Joy Division, Gang of Four, Pere Ubu, the Fall etc. I just love this sound. 93-97 or so: Indie rock and electronica. Fugazi, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Portishead, DJ Shadow etc.

Im 31 and i would agree that besides current music, 60s and early 70s was awesome. I cant believe anyone would admit they like 80s music. Sure there were a couple good songs, but best era? NewbieJr 541 Posted June 16, 2015 '75 to '85 I tend to say 80's music is the best, but I'm only referring to the first half of the decade. '86 to '89 may be the absolute worst in the history of music. New Wave has died out. Classic rock bands like Jefferson Starship and Chicago were churning out AM Radio pop. And rock and roll became whatever you'd call the crap Poison, Warrant, and Motley Crue were releasing.
edjr 6,578 Posted June 16, 2015 And rock and roll became whatever you'd call the crap Poison, Warrant, and Motley Crue were releasing. you are dead to me Poison, yes, not a talented member of the bunch and fock Motley Crue. Cherry Pie aside, Jani Lane wrote some good songs and was a very talented writer. released 1992

Cherry Pie aside, Jani Lane wrote some good songs and was a very talented writer. released 1992 All three of those groups had the occasional listenable song. Not saying there was no talent there. They just turned rock into a pretty boy glam thing. More about makeup and hairspray than anything else.
cbfalcon 825 Posted June 16, 2015 I believe it was Homer Simpson that complained "When are they going to come out with some new classic rock?" I'm 37, and I've always liked current music best. 85-90: GnR, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, etc. 90-95: Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Snoop and Dre, Smashing Pumpkins, etc 95-00: The Toadies, Radiohead, Tool, RATM, Bush, Oasis 00-15: Radiohead, Muse, The National, The Shins, The Strokes, The White Stripes, Interpol, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, Alt-J, TV on the Radio, etc. And so it goes. There are always exceptions and classics and things I'll listen to on occasion out of nostalgia. But even going back to albums from 5 years ago bores me compared to listening to music I've downloaded within the past year.

No, it's a bunch of auto-tuned junk. No where near the level of musical talent today than say the 80s.

Voltaire 5,208 Posted June 17, 2015 I don't know much about modern music since I've been overseas so long but the 90s got bad by around 93 or so. I listen to a lot of '80s music and whenever I'm in he mood to look for 'new' stuff to put into my personal collection I go in search of something to dig up from the 70s, 60s, or 50s. I suppose once I've mined those as thoroughly as I've mined the 80s, I'll start trying to find more stuff that's recent but one thing I certainly won't be doing is looking into any mid-late 90s music at all. In fairness, modern stuff has some good songs on the rare occasion I ever hear any of it. But all this hiphop and rap is total earbleeding garbage other that White and Nerdy by Weird Al. jerryskids 6,597 Posted June 17, 2015 I'll say 67-80, during which I was 0-13 years old. I've always been a fan of musical talent, and it just seemed like there was so much more then, regardless of genre. Folk bands like Crosby Stills and Nash, Simon and Garfunkel. Rock like The Who, Hendrix, Sabbath, early Rush, early Styx. Early Elton John and Billy Joel. Real bands playing real instruments creating complex melodies and harmonies. I hated the 80's at the time, which sucked because that was my HS and college years. Musicality went into the shiotter. Towards the end of college though, a friend of mine said something that I've never forgotten -- just because the music isn't that great doesn't mean it can't be fun. I find that I enjoy 80's music much more now than I did then, just appreciating it for what it was vs. judging it against a musical standard. And I never got into the metal scene, other than Iron Maiden who in many ways saved the 80's for me. And all of the hair bands, blech. Somehow I missed out on Metallica though, whom I've come to appreciate greatly, moreso songs like One and Unforgiven than Master of Puppets. I just never was a headbanger. The 90's would be my second choice; a rebellion against the shmaltz of the 80s.

I took an elective last fall called Intro to the Music Industry. The module on studio engineering was eye opening. I got the opportunity to listen to the pre- production and post-production recordings of songs from many huge bands— Beatles, Stones, Queen and many others. It was astonishing how much the studio can change the way the music sounds. Don’t let yourself believe that Post Malone is the only one benefiting from production. ETA: also, to answer the question, 1976-1982.
