I doubt it. Slavery was long abolished in Mexico while California was still a part of the country and California was admitted as a free state in 1850, mere months after the gold rush started.

I don't get the kneeling as a protest. I was raised Catholic; you kneel during the most sacred part of the Mass (when the wafers and wine become the body and blood of Christ). To me they are showing more respect.
