Cruzer 1,992 Posted May 24, 2017 Least according to this recent study. In the burger category, Five Guys ranked the highest in all three categories; however, McDonald’s holds the highest familiarity score across all brands. After Five Guys, the Top 10 burger brands were In-N-Out, Shake Shack, Wendy’s, Culver’s, Whataburger, McDonald’s, SONIC America’s Drive-In, Smashburger and Steak ‘n Shake. iam90sbaby 2,129 Posted May 24, 2017 Five Guys is definitely the best burger when it comes to huge chains and far better than In-N-Out. I went there for the first time when I was in San Diego earlier this year and I thought it was crap. West coasters don't know how to make a good burger. Stick to guacamole dip and gluten free pizza. Cruzer 1,992 Posted May 24, 2017 I wish 5 Guys had McDonald's type fries. I hate the ones they make there.
kutulu 1,552 Posted May 24, 2017 Not that big a fan... Their burgers give me terrible heartburn and agree the fries are lacking.

Thought the same thing. Way over hyped. If I want barbecue....I'm not going to Minnesota. You want a good burger? Better go to the Midwest...not California. mobb_deep 917 Posted May 24, 2017 I'd take an In N Out burger over a 5 guys every time. west coast bias
BunnysBastatrds 1,926 Posted May 24, 2017 Had my first burger there Saturday. Good burger but I agree with fries sucking.
Bier Meister 1,517 Posted May 24, 2017 I have been going to in-n-out since the late 80's. i still consider it the best fast food burger. i would say that i believe all of them have gone down hill over the past 5-10 years. about 5-6 years ago is started hearing about the 5 guys vs in-n-out debate. while visiting a friend near a 5 guys, we tried them. i like the topic options at 5 guys, but burger vs burger preferred in-n-out. fries also went to in-n-out. i currently live close to both and have been to both a bit. 5 guys constantly disappoints. burgers are not seasoned enough, fries are soggy and over-seasoned. While i prefer 5 guys to other fast food, i have hit a point that i have given 5 guys enough attempts to still choose in-n-out when both options present themselves. We have another chain out here that i would say is in the same category as 5 guys- Habit. that is our first stop for burgers.
Bier Meister 1,517 Posted May 24, 2017 in-n-out fries= used to be much better. these days if i am not eating there, i order them well done.
Reality 2,710 Posted May 24, 2017 Agreed on 5 Guys. I'll take Wendy's next on the list, very underrated burger.
wiffleball 4,649 Posted May 24, 2017 Culver's was a nice surprise. 5 is too impressed with themselves. Way too many chains these days. End of the day, it's a freaking burger. Wasn't too long ago that all the smart businessman telling us that burger joints are on their way out because of the changing American palate. smart money was going to places like Chipotle and Subway. How'd that work out?
Frozenbeernuts 1,652 Posted May 24, 2017 The fries suck. Burger is decent. I like Red Robin when they actually give a fock about their product. But that doesn't seem to happen at most places

supermike80 1,288 Posted May 24, 2017 Its a hamburger. So all in all it's hard to mess up. 5 guys is good. But expensive. And hate their fries. They give you a bag full, so never order a large order, but they are soggy and lame. Outside of that they are just another burger joint.
Hardcore troubadour 12,695 Posted May 24, 2017 I have to say I still like the old stand by McDonalds 1/4 pounder. I think it's the raw onions.
NewbieJr 540 Posted May 24, 2017 Five Guys is very tasty, but between their burgers and and their fries, everything is so greasy. That's a once-a-year treat for me.

But that doesn't seem to happen at most places You're kinda in another restaurant tier with Red Robin I'd say. Not really a "burger joint".
Vikings4ever 496 Posted May 24, 2017 I'm obviously in the minority, but my favorite is Hardee's Monster Burger. 5 Guys would be second, never been to In-N-Out.
Djgb13 2,338 Posted May 24, 2017 Whataburger should be ranked higher than what it is. Wendy's and shake shack ranked higher? GTFO. Wendy's burgers are better than McDonald's but not by much. Whataburger is hands down better all around than every chain except 5 guys. Better fries, better burgers, better shakes, better specials, and you can get a burger and fries any time of the day. Was great when I was working night shift. Get off at 6:15 AM and head to whataburger for burger and fries.

Seconded. I went to In-and-Out for the first time, in Anaheim last year. What a colossal disappointment compared to the hype. It was good, but hell, Wendy's is better. I can't believe it was ranked up there with 5 Guys...not even close. I don't know how expansive the Wayback burger chain is, but that's a good burger. Damn close to 5 Guys. In n Outs fries are complete sh1t. Their burger was oversold. It was good but not great. I'd rather go to whataburger for my food. They come out with special burgers from time to time too. And spicy ketchup is a must
BufordT 371 Posted May 25, 2017 I have to say I still like the old stand by McDonalds 1/4 pounder. I think it's the raw onions. I agree. The 1/4 pounder is great when it comes out hot. It seem McD's doesn't believe in serving hot food anymore, though. Sad When I was stationed in SD there was a chain call Bull Weevil (sp) they were always my fav. Went there about once a week when I could. Not sure if they're still around

jerryskids 5,213 Posted May 25, 2017 Interesting... There is a 5 Guys 1.5 miles from me but I've never had it. I've had In-N-Out a bazillion times and love it, albeit not often near home because I try not to eat crap when I am home. Anyway, I feel like I'll make an exception and try the bacon double cheeseburger in the near future.

iam90sbaby 2,129 Posted May 25, 2017 A lot of franchises (like taco bell) have axed quality ingredients for processed, laboratory substitutes. If they had ever changed their recipes and still used the same ingredients, where would you rank them compared to todays restaurants? What would Arby's or Taco Bell be comparable to today? Cruzer 1,992 Posted May 25, 2017 If they had ever changed their recipes and still used the same ingredients, where would you rank them compared to todays restaurants? What would Arby's or Taco Bell be comparable to today? To be honest, I've never really been an Arby's guy. If they were different back then, I really wouldn't have noticed.. But Taco Bell? Omg, it was the bomb. I'd have to put them in the top 3 for sure - and definitely the best fast food Mexican place. Just as an example - TB used to: make their beans fresh each day, grade their own cheese from real cheese blocks, use premium meat.. Now the beans are dehydrated powder, the cheese some kind of chemical reproduction - and the meat just gross.
