JustinCharge 2,397 Posted September 17, 2020 Pundits expected a good number of people to return but they fell WAY short of expectations. I wonder if this is foreshadow a colossal drop in turnout in the 2020 November election. https://news.yahoo.com/movie-theaters-returned-audiences-didnt-185407492.html Movie Theaters Returned. Audiences Didn't. Now What? Nicole Sperling and Brooks Barnes ,The New York Times•September 16, 2020 LOS ANGELES — “Tenet” was supposed to mark the return of the movie theater business in the United States. Instead, it has shown just how much trouble the industry is in. After five months of pandemic-forced closure, the big movie theater chains reopened in roughly 68% of the United States by Labor Day weekend, in large part so they could show the $200 million film, which Warner Bros. promoted as “a global tent pole of jaw-dropping size, scope and scale.” But “Tenet,” directed by box-office heavyweight Christopher Nolan, instead arrived with a whimper: It collected $9.4 million in its first weekend in North America and just $29.5 million over its first two weeks. BiffTannen 651 Posted September 17, 2020 I’m surprised it took this long for theaters to die. Ever since big HD televisions 15 years ago I have opted to enjoy movies at home where I can drink cheaply, smoke marijuana in my living room, and pause when I have to piss. The last movie I saw in a movie theater was The Departed.

FlyinHeadlock 459 Posted September 17, 2020 Shocked they were making it even before the hoaxademic. I'm more curious if they keep current movies available for streaming or kill it.
Voltaire 4,559 Posted September 17, 2020 Hollywood, like sports, is too woke and divisive and the performers are getting exposed as horrible people. At the same time, because of the pandemic, venues are shut down and online exists as a rival for free. We'll see what the entertainment industry does to shake out of this. TimmySmith 2,782 Posted September 17, 2020 Under 30s still go. And they pay a lot for the reservation, the lounge chairs, the waitress service. They are not concerned about the GC demographic who wouldn't pay for that stuff anyway. They will return.

avoiding injuries 1,220 Posted September 17, 2020 I’m not sure why Hollywood thinks it can insult half of their customers and there wouldn’t be a pushback. For instance, I have no desire to watch a movie Deniro is in. And Goodfellas and Casino are two of my favorite movies.

The last movie I saw in a movie theater was The Departed. It's not just movies that have declining attendance, but sports too - particularly college football. Some SEC schools have reverted to selling alcohol in stadiums to entice attendance and some have lowered concession prices. It's just a different world for a multitude of reasons - hdtv definitely being a part of it. For the record, the last movie I saw in a theater was Apollo 13 - in 1995. RLLD 3,455 Posted September 17, 2020 I think theaters can still function and maybe prosper, they have been overpriced for some time and people were still going....... I suspect that there is some apprehension about going to a movie right now because of this COVID stuff, it might not resolve until a vaccine is widely distributed I bet. TBayXXXVII 2,117 Posted September 17, 2020 The entertainment industry has spoken. When Trump wanted to put sanctions on China for violating our intellectual property rights, the movie and music industry bashed him. That tells me that musicians and actors/actresses are ok with pirated data and they're ok with me not paying for their products. So, I don't pay for it. peenie 1,690 Posted September 17, 2020 I don't want to see Avengers 19 or Batman 25. When they start making adult movies again I'll go. I'm so angry because I had to watch the most boring adult films when I was a child. Now that I'm old all movies are geared toward kids. I love the movie theater experience.

True. Some of their original programming is good. We have Disney + too. A lot of good nature shows on all of them. Trying to get the kids to watch them. No woke that I have noticed. MTSkiBum 1,594 Posted September 17, 2020 I have only been to the movies 3 times in the last decade. There are not many movies that interest me enough. The movies that I have wanted to watch, all turn out to be awful. A good example is the Dark Tower movie. If that was well done I would have loved to see it in the theatres, instead it was so bad I still have not watched it to this day.
