Since we all can agree that the woman in that video does not have a big butt, can we move on to the concept of "hourglass?"  I'm a big fan, but some folks like @Hardcore troubadourhave taken it to mean fat.  It doesn't -- it means a small waist to hip ratio (WHR), which is correlated to increased fertility:

IMHO, nearly all modern men will find attractive on what was "normalized" as attractive in their youth. 

Sometimes you'll have a situation where someone works in another country, and they bring their kids, and their kids are raised in a different culture, so those kids grow up to be attracted to what was "normalized"  For example, some people get work in South Korea or Japan. Their sons or daughters grow up, if they are white or black or Hispanic, to be around a lot of Asians. So it's "normalized" to immerse in the culture and see it as day to day reality. 

Studies have been done that the Number#1 prized attribute in women, from men, across time, culture and throughout recorded human history is youth. I am, of course, inferring legal adults here, at the age of majority in the respective state, country or nation. 

Sometimes I've noticed many people are confused about black men and overweight white women. Why it happens often. Well what is the practical weight distribution in American for black women in general?  The rough numbers, IIRC, is about 4 out of 5 black American women are considered "overweight" but about 60 percent classify as "obese" at minimum. If that's what you are grew up with and that's what normalized, it's not a social deterrent. 

Here's where IMHO I find the biggest difference happens. 

Men typically operate on a Pass/Fail scale for attractiveness in women. Basically if you want to sleep with her or not. Men have their own sense of personal attractiveness "disciplined" by the role as pursuers. They typically ask women out. Once it's clear a certain "tier" of women reject them automatically, and it becomes more clear what range they can get. 

Women, in contrast, operate to an "attribute" scale for attractiveness to other women. If another women tells her female coworker that she has "pretty eyes", to lots of women, they will self assess as "pretty"  If you have subjectively "pretty eyes" but 99 percent of men have you as a "Fail" on their scale, then what does it matter? 

Do men like big butts? Does it matter for all men? Because it only really matters to the subset of men that said woman finds attractive. Women can find a man attractive solely on social proof. The opposite is not true. Not even close. 

The "safe zone" is this - Young ( but of legal age), thin, pleasant, not too much "baggage" 

The distinction between "thin" and "average" is a long long road. If the weight ranges of women has risen overall in America in current times, what constitutes "average" has changed. It becomes nebulous. However thin is pretty predictable. It cannot be co-opted as a descriptor by another manipulation or ideology. 

What is probably unsettling to many modern American women is that the "baseline" of attractiveness from men's perspective is often pretty static. There might some variation depending on culture and groups, but within those subsets, there's not a ton of flex there. Looks are social currency and many women don't have the "bank account" to spend to get what they want. Harsh as that might sound. It's not meant to be harsh though. Reproduction and mating has always been an open competition for resources. Since the beginning of the human race. 

Saying "big butts" reinforces that view of attractiveness by "attribute" that nearly all women IMHO tend to carry as "their truth" 

Put that same woman under the general Pass/Fail scale and then that Big Butt is simply garnish on the plate. It's not the steak, it's the parsley. 

But this is my viewpoint, the mileage for everyone else can and will differ.

It "means" that each person should strive to find their "authentic" selves, and learn to accept themselves given the time and place. And from a place of good self esteem, effective boundaries and self awareness, shed the desire for external validation and self improve from a place of genuine self care. 

I understand how "looks" works as a social currency is drastically different for men compared to women.  

Real happiness, whatever can be found in this life, as corny as it sounds, has to start from the inside. 

Concepts like kindness, compassion and empathy can only manifest externally after it's accepted as truth internally first. That's real "liberation" Not some agenda driven crap shoveled by Oprah to sell some books or some product. I wish women would be kinder in general to many men. But first, to start, I wish women could learn to be kind to themselves internally first. This is where the real change needs to start.

The average guy can learn a lot about women from Sex And The City ( or other shows/films that are seen as aimed only towards women) if they pay attention. 

Here Charlotte and Carrie are essentially fighting about money. But money and friendship is a very complex subject. This scene has a lot of subtext to it. Charlotte is a "traditional beauty", who is also the youngest by age of the four main characters, that is just going to find it easier to find someone wealthy to take care of her, if that's her choice, in this "universe" 

Carrie however is in a different boat. Darren Star constructed her more in line with the audience's POV (probably a bit more than Candice Bushnell's original book) so they can relate to this world and context. Sarah Jessica Parker was cast for the express reason that she is considered "non conventionally attractive"

Carrie Bradshaw's pathology here though is a pretty huge neon sign of what is to come with someone like this. Much of the lesson here is that men operate with other men far differently than women operate with other women. Men typically value tenure and loyalty. It matters if someone stood by you, thick or thin, even if they don't have a ton of status in the future. The majority of women however operate to pure utility. Carrie and Charlotte are not really friends. Not in the honest conventional sense. Both are useful to each other in some way. When that utility ends, so does the "relationship" between them. 

The design was for the audience to lean towards Carrie's situation and POV here, she is the "star character", but the subtext is pretty interesting. It's that Charlotte does suffer despite "being the pretty one"  Everyone has problems, some people just have different kinds of problems where most people can't relate. 

You can learn from anything if the potential is there. You don't see it. OK, so that's not everyone else's fault that you can't see it. The answer is for you to level up, not demand everyone else stoop down.
