Coronavirus - Doomsday

An American and British expat have had a YouTube channel chronicling their life in China, usually filming on motorcycle rides, and one episode I saw that stood out to me was them going next to buildings that had been erected incredibly quickly even though there were no direct plans for any inhabitants. (I forget the financial incentive behind it but there was one). The structures, which looked decent initially, were crumbling quickly, and after only a year or so, not even safe to be walking next to. I can find the episode if anyone's interested, but the hospital thing wasn't impressing me due to that. And then in this case, as mentioned, I'd assume they're being approached as temporary in the first place.

Winston is South African, not British. I've seen most of their episodes for the last two years, but not all and not this one.

So I thought I was the only one saying the doctor who died was murdered and his was all bogus but it’s a common theory. Lots of people know China silences people and doctors are now asking for immunity and protection from freedom speech on the matter.

I seriously doubt he was murdered. As in, there's almost a zero percent chance of this.

His story is well known. His reputation is not only fully restored but he's being honored as a national hero. Meanwhile, it's the local authorities that had sought to shut him up that are the ones disgraced. You have to recognize that it is Beijing is in charge of Wuhan right now and while Beijing is seriously pissed..... not a drop of that anger is directed at this doctor. They know and the whole country knows that if he had been taken seriously, they wouldn't have this problem.

Toss this conspiracy theory outt he window. Do not doubt, the Chinese would have done anything possible to keep him alive.

I went back out shopping again today. stores are generally full. I would say there are no shortages but that would be misleading as the local grocery store was really low on fruit. They weren't out, but I'd not see empty shelves and such miserable selection. Vegetables were OK. Meanwhile, down the street was a fruit shop, so no big deal that the grocery store was out. Otherwise, stores were stocked. Prices weren't gouged. The ATM had money. Three local bakeries are closed so I can't get fresh bread normally but today entailed a trip downtown to Walmart that has foreign food and the bakery section is fully stocked with bread.

There's hardly anybody walking around, foot traffic is maybe 5-10% of normal and those that do all were wearing masks.... except this one guy, bless him, that had his mask down around his neck while he puffed away on a cigarette. So hardly anybody is outside.

And for those that are outside, there's not many places to go. The grocery stores, convenience stores, pharmacies are all open, I saw a bank open. Nearly everything else is closed. Like  I said the local bakery, all restaurants, all services, the place I fix my computer (and I do need my computer fixed), car repair places.... dang near everything is closed. Movie theatres are long since closed. So there's no place to go to do stuff. You buy food and supplies, it's mostly all there except the fruit at the local grocery store and the bread. Chinese aren't big on bread, it's a rice shortage that would cause a panic.

I took a taxi downtown to go to Walmart today because that's the only place to get foreign food. The Chinese don't really use dairy so cheese, butter, the small selection of cereal and juice. 100% real juice not "juice drink." Downtown too, everybody in masks.

This done, I don't anticipate leaving the house again any time soon until supplies go low. Fireballer put some N95 masks in the mail recently so I look forward to getting them. I'm still using the same surgical masks.

Panzhihua is still at 12 cases of coronavirus. As I've mentioned a few times, eight are one family and three are friends of that family, plus one person unrelated. Meanwhile, one person locally has recovered. And the lengths we're going locally to prevent the spread are significant. I can't speak for Wuhan, but if the rest of China is like Panzhihua, this thing will likely start settling down as the local government here is doing a great job it seems to me.

I have a full face respirator from my old job.  I wonder what cartridges would be recommended.

Imagine me showing up to the Walmart in a full face respirator?  Excuse me.  What aisle is the mustard in?

"News" lately (CPP probably knew since December) is that it's transmittable via aerosol - tiny and rides the air, virulent over a distance, not just droplets.

P100 GME is what I use at work on scenes when we no longer use SCBA.  They filter damn near everything.

What are the odds the Olympics get canceled this year?  July 24 - August 9.  I honestly hope if this is still going on they would choose to at least postpone them.  Imagine people from all over the world convening in Japan for two weeks then going back home.  That seems like a really bad idea.

@Voltaire

Ever eat pangolin?

I dunno what that is. If it's meat probably not. I don't eat weird animals or weird parts of animals that I normally do it. If it's vegetable or fruit, maybe. I eat a lot of things that I don't know what it is,

See, the focking Chinese... they like impressing people by taking them to a nice restaurant and spend lots of money on weird ass exotic animals. And when they do that with me, I always decline to eat it.

"No thank you, I'll have some chicken, beef, or pork, thanks."

Then they bring out chicken feet or pig's ear and I turn that down too.

Homie don't play that.

If you go to China and there's a meat dish that you don't recognize... ask what it is, then figure out if you want to eat it or not. Many years ago, I was tricked into eating dog. Actually, I don't rightly recall the dinner, If I was tricked or that I didn't ask. Since then, I make a point to always ask and I don't mind saying "no".

Still waiting for Doomsday. 😴

On one hand the rest of the world is still doing fine with the virus. There are not many deaths and it does not seem to be spreading fast.

On the other hand China's reaction is still on the extreme side, and the fact that it killed a young doctor almost 25 days after he was first diagnosed is concerning.

I truly do not know what to believe at this point. We will know more in 30 days for sure, once the cruise liner patients either recover or hit complications.

That doctor was silenced and murdered, no way he died from Wuhan. Many have contracted it and had it pass like any other flu. Many did not seek treatment or report it for fear of weeks long quarantine.

It’s an exotic animal and can carry the coronavirus.  May believe it’s how this started.

Maybe, but right now I agree with Voltaire. I do not think they martyr a hero of the people.

Can we automatically assume that actual deaths or infections are at least 5x as much as the lying socialists/communists report?  I suggest that foreign socialists/communists lie as much, likely more, than our domestic brand....

This is the scary part. China refused our help in dealing with this because they want to control the narrative. Business travel, tourism, etc are vital to their economy. They've tried to keep the severity of this under wraps from the get go. We really have no idea how many cases there are and how many have died.

I like to think the twelve reported cases in my city are accurate seeing as that number hasn't changed in three days or so. You don't need symptoms to have it so I have wonder how many cases are out there that haven't been detected and hope it's zero. Each day that goes by with that number stuck at twelve makes me happy... another ten days would indicate we may be in the clear locally.

As for Wuhan, who knows?

Are the factories up and running yet? Let’s face it, that’s what’s really important to us, not how China is a dangerous country that violates human rights and sells us junk, some of it dangerous. People need their phones and the stock market has to keep humming.  Focus people, focus.

From my apartment window, I can't see any factories. Still, I have a massive ammount of free time and have kept my finger on the pulse of the stories.

A lot of Chinese factory workers went home for the New Year Holiday and are away from their work place. Transportation between cities is a problem. They live in dormitories and nobody wants to be in close proximity to anybody else.

The holdiay is winding down. China is going to have to figure out how much GDP they're willing to sacrifice in a balance with public safety.

I read an article yesterday about Africa being worried when Chinese migrant workers start returning.  Supposedly over a million are working there and about 1500 Chinese fly into Ethiopia daily.

I heard that the US pulled out FDA workers that oversee the production of pharmaceuticals destined for the US market. So now no one is watching them. Great.

Yeah, the next two weeks will be telling, as far as cases outside China.

A Chinese doc (not the one who died) who came down with it explained that the first week was pretty mild. Things started getting uncomfortable in the second week, reached a somewhat dramatic point, and then he crested the third week by making it out of the rough patch and getting better. It's that rough patch mid - late second week that's been killing people. He relayed that's what he's been witnessing as well.
