Interesting to compare Trump's response to beer flu (and the media's hysteria) to Obama's response to swine flu.

https://www.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/10/24/h1n1.obama/index.html

Washington (CNN) -- President Obama has declared a national emergency to deal with the "rapid increase in illness" from the H1N1 influenza virus.

"The 2009 H1N1 pandemic continues to evolve. The rates of illness continue to rise rapidly within many communities across the nation, and the potential exists for the pandemic to overburden health care resources in some localities," Obama said in a statement.

"Thus, in recognition of the continuing progression of the pandemic, and in further preparation as a nation, we are taking additional steps to facilitate our response."

The president signed the declaration late Friday and announced it Saturday.

Calling the emergency declaration "an important tool in our kit going forward," one administration official called Obama's action a "proactive measure that's not in response to any new development."
....

Obama's action allows Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius "to temporarily waive or modify certain requirements" to help health care facilities enact emergency plans to deal with the pandemic.
....

Since the H1N1 flu pandemic began in April, millions of people in the United States have been infected, at least 20,000 have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
....

"We are nowhere near where we thought we would be," Frieden said, acknowledging that manufacturing delays have contributed to less vaccine being available than expected. "As public health professionals, vaccination is our strongest tool. Not having enough is frustrating to all of us."

In China it is because they took drastic measures. They can get away with welding residents inside apartments. The US may fare worse because the gov can't control the citizens like China can

I'm finding it hard to believe that China can control the virus with a population of approximately 1.5 billion people. Just like others, it runs it's course. Yes, it'll cause casualties but so do other viruses.

Did you mean the guy that died or me?

Yup, and there are more to come from that location. I have a couple of trips coming, including to Seattle next week and I think the panic is just too much.

Let’s put our efforts to contain and prevent a total pandemic, and maybe national travel restrictions will be part of the solution, but I think it is overkill. While, I will hop into the stock market more if it continues to drop, I think this panic is going to really hurt us.

God Bless the American inclination towards suburban and rural living. That'll help.

At the opposite end is living in an institution, any institution at all, but especially an institution full of infirm elderly people.

Speaking of elderly, even on a cruise ship full of elderly people, those elderly are healthy enough to be mobile and self sufficient.

The Chinese went to great lengths to control the virus. I've seen and lived it first hand. We'll call January 22nd the shifting of gears from non-reaction to overdrive.

Coronavirus has demonstrated both the downside and the upside of totalitarianism.

I agree. While they badly bungled it at first, eventually they kicked into high gear.

The US government does not have the ability to implement such stringent controls, and the American populace wouldn't stand for it.

Hell, my boss went back home to hubei for the holidays. She hasn't left her apartment a single time in over 40 days now.

They are delivering free masks, sanitizer, and three meals a day to our apartments to keep us in the house. It's been a pretty impressive crackdown.

Right. And before this happened, they had more hospital beds per capita than the U.S. They were still overwhelmed but we're just in another league of not ready.

Our ventilator : people likely to need them ratio is pretty foreboding.

Apparently for many years our institutions have approached pandemic prep in a 'put out spotfires' approach. Concentrate on communities where the virus is gaining a foothold, move onto the next. The gameplan may be lacking an approach for a firestorm. Which may be what's brewing because we were sitting on many cases.

We're in a precarious window of time where we've probably had a critical amount of community spread but many are not yet to the most difficult point of their sickness.

And for many it's mild, but we're probably looking at way too many of our parents getting into trouble with this.

The us also practices much better hygene than China and is vastly less densely populated. Most people here live in 30 story towers where things like ventilation systems and even the plumbing can help spread. That is not the case in America.

Americans live a much more isolated lifestyle anyway. Your own home. Your own car.

It will not spread as fast in America as it did here.

You also have to consider what "hospital beds per capita" means.

Let's just assume for a moment that such stat isn't an absolute lie. Which it probably is, being a statistic given by the chinese communist party.

Now, as I said, I spent some time in the chinese peoples hospital. Let me tell you the differences.

First, while I as a foreigner was lucky enough to have a private room, that is not the norm. I walked around the hospital, and most were crammed six beds to a room that is not much larger than a standard American hospital room.

Then, they don't feed you or really care for you at all. Your family is supposed to do it. That means the halls are crowded with family. There is laundry hanging all over the place.

Now, the toilets for the public are so filthy it makes you gag to walk by it. This is in a hospital mind you. And the place I'm general is pretty Filthy.

Then, the doctors...lets just say they are not very well trained and leave it there.

And all this was years ago. I imagine the hospitals in Wuhan right now are something out of an apocalypse movie.

There is a reason that people choose to hide that they are sick and risk dying at home rather than go there.

eta: I spent five days in there for a hernia surgery. In America that would have been outpatient. American hospitals want you the fock out. Chinese hospitals not so much.

Another elementary school in our school district is closed today, though luckily it isn't one where my wife works.  The entire district will be closed tomorrow for cleaning and there will be a meeting that my wife needs to attend to discuss ways to avoid getting too close to others.  Difficult for my wife since she's a physical therapist that deals with special needs kids.

Ironically enough that nursing home with the first US death that's been plastered on the news is Life Care Center of Kirkland  When we moved here 23 yrs ago my wife worked at Life Care Center of Bothell and covered a few shifts at the Kirkland location when they were short staffed.  Hope this isnt a long drawn out Final Destination type scenario!

Lots of fun today with all sorts of pandemic planning.  Our clients want to know what measures we are taking and it sounds like we are suspending travel internationally and to our Seattle office.  :o

'Do it yourself' means that the price is great. Highly recommended for those on a budget.

My inlaws just sold their house in Vero Beach FL to move to a retirement condo place in the Detroit area (where they are from).  They arrived yesterday and are staying with their son and DIL while the place is made ready.  But DIL has some stomach flu with stuff coming out of both ends, not bat flu but yay!  Also my FIL is in his 80s with chronic respiratory problems, looking forward to him moving into a retirement home.  Add this to my daughter with diabetes, and I just want this to go away.  :(

First case confirmed in NYC

New York state reported its first case, a 39-year-old Manhattan woman who contracted the virus while traveling in Iran, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday. The woman, a health care worker, is isolated in her home with "respiratory symptoms" but is not in serious condition, he said. Expect more cases, he added

The below article could explain people being "reinfected". Maybe it just takes a couple months to beat the virus.

https://www.livescience.com/coronavirus-spread-after-recovery.html

A small study out of China suggests that the new coronavirus can persist in the body for at least two weeks after symptoms of the disease clear up.

This sort of persistence isn't unheard of among viruses, experts told Live Science, and thankfully, the patients are most likely not very contagious in the post-symptom period. The findings may even be good news, said Krys Johnson, an epidemiologist at Temple University's College of Public Health. The viruses that tend to hang around in people's systems also tend to be the viruses that the body develops a strong immune response against.

"If the virus is staying in people's systems, then they may not be able to be reinfected," Johnson told Live Science.

Trump announced that he's going to go on with Trump rallies as planned. And there's no concern about so many people in a tight area.

At least in this instance, he's putting his money where his mouth is, since he'll be inside that incubator also.

I did hear today that the NCAA is considering having no attendance for some of the tournament games.  Will depend on location and if there are reported outbreaks in the area.

His programmers are seeding their tiny little brains that trump should be halting his campaign to deal with this crisis, because that's what a real leader would do.

He brought it up last week too, look for this to be one of the latest and greatest omg trumps awful symptom of TDS.
